Remember, Democrats have repeatedly advanced measures to ban partisan gerrymandering and Republicans have voted against them time after time.

This is the game Republicans wanted to play. OK, then.

Everyone knows the way you change the Constitution is to have six people in robes make up a new Constitution as they go along.

The currently escalating tech backlash must be put in the context of:

“people have been listening to the most insufferable techbros in the world gleefully threaten everyone else with mass unemployment for over 6 years, and they’re sick of their shit”

He builds affordable tiny houses. The problem is where to put them. Timbercraft owner Doug Schroeder has a new strategy to help the niche dwellings go mainstream.

"You’re basically putting in an upscale RV park. And there’s zoning for that.”

Nice piece on an Alabama developer who's building out an entire tiny home community since city zoning is still so stacked against TH infill. www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...

The Inside Story of Five Days That Remade the Supreme Court

it is, among other things, incredibly striking to see that roberts was so solicitous of the burden the clean power plan might put on fossil fuel executives, when, a decade later, he is indifferent to the way trump’s moves have thrown hundreds of thousands of lives into turmoil.

Are environmental reviews really a problem?

Well, folks, consider: a Sam's Club on north Aurora (near where I live) closed several years ago. Been sitting vacant, attracting ... the stuff vacant buildings attract. There's a proposal to open a low-cost grocery there. Much needed! However ...

San Diego Now Has So Much Water That It’s Selling It With the Colorado River in crisis, Arizona and Nevada are turning to an unconventional life line: the ocean water off California’s golden beaches.

Nice piece about San Diego's desalination plant, and how planning that started decades ago set the city up to have an excess of water now—when so many other parts of California are struggling.

BREAKING: The U.S. bishops’ Committee on Doctrine just issued a formal statement defending Pope Leo XIV's teaching authority on just war doctrine — less than twelve hours after JD Vance told a Turning Point USA crowd the pope should “be careful” talking theology.

This is a serious escalation.

Again: for any big liberal donor who wants to funnel millions into fixing this country's politics, the ROI on buying any struggling paper and simply tasking it with doing real reporting on local news is vastly higher than the same $$ given to some group that does mass ad buys every election year.

I suspect the Pope sounds "woke" to many Christian conservatives because the US is steeped in prosperity theology, where the point of worship is to deliver health and wealth to believers. Thus, "feed the hungry" and "show mercy for the poor" sounds needlessly political and "woke."

This kind of thing at Substack (including their Nazi problem and trans hate problem) are why my newsletter is at Ghost.org and always has been. Andrew Tate is a spectacularly vile human being accused of numerous violent crimes against women and hugely corrosive for young male minds.

Oregon Voters Have Zero Choice in DA Races - Bolts Each of Oregon's 15 DA elections is uncontested this year, shutting the door for public debate around prosecutors’ policies and power over people’s lives.

I think that lack of competition is one of the most important mini-beats we cover at @boltsmag.org. Here’s @taniel.bsky.social on Oregon, where 15 DA seats are up this year, and every one of them drew just a single candidate: boltsmag.org/oregon-uncon...

It is legit funny but it doesn’t change the fact that if your mayor went on FB tonight, said that the Pope sucked, and then posted an AI painting of themselves as Jesus Christ performing miracles, they would be removed from office in less than 48 hours.

WHAT WE KNOW, 11pm:

—Liberals flip seat on Wisconsin supreme court.
—Also flip important school board seats in WI, OK, MO.
—Dems win Waukesha mayor race.
—GOP defends MTG's seat, but Dems way overperform.
—Big MO county rejects property tax freeze.

We built a communications system intended to be so redundant it could survive a nuclear war and now it struggles anytime there's a rainy day at an Amazon server farm.

Fascinating to hear house owners continue to claim, in a majority-renter city, that residences for renters do not belong in "residential areas" because those renters will destroy "the character of our neighborhoods." (They also don't want people without yards to live near parks.) It's 1991 for them.

When home espresso makers fail, coffee fans call this Seattle fixit shop A tiny repair business in North Seattle has helped coffee lovers keep their machines in top shape for brewing and steaming for about 40 years. We squeeze inside for a peek.

Have driven by this shop on Phinney Ridge so many times and wondered what the story was. How lovely that @seattletimes-rss.bsky.social told it!

Meet the ‘Literary King of Tulsa’ (Before He Moves to Seattle)

This is SUCH a good story about how Jeff Martin built a thriving literary hub in Tulsa (basically as a volunteer!). Here's hoping he can inject some life into Seattle's literary scene too...

Dear Christian,

If you’re demanding that the Ten Commandments be put up in public schools, but you’re not holding this president or his administration accountable to a single one of them, please don’t act like you actually take them seriously.

it’s not surprising exactly but it is still shocking just how fast we’ve moved from “woke was excessive” framing to open and explicit white male supremacy

I have yet to see a piece in a prominent MAGA outlet that seeks to understand what motivated No Kings protesters. It’s all just “they were paid” or “they have TDS.” Meanwhile, the Tea Party inspired an avalanche of think pieces and books from centrists and leftists trying to figure it out.

If a secdef violating the 14th amendment rights of US servicemembers by denying promotions based on race isn’t impeachable then I don’t see what is. The man would rather the military be racist than effective.

Call me a carceral urbanist but I think we should strongly discourage the kind of driving behavior that can wipe out entire families, and one of the ways to do that is by imprisoning people whose reckless driving wipes out entire families.

In what possible world does it represent justice to let this woman, who wiped out an entire family and has never even apologized to their relatives, regain her driver's license? She was doing 3x the speed limit: 75mph in a 25mph zone. Put her behind the wheel and she might do it again.

Cesar Chavez, a Civil Rights Icon, Is Accused of Abusing Girls for Years

The Cesar Chavez story discussed yesterday is out, in the New York Times. Two women say that he sexually assaulted them as children, beginning when they were 12 and 13. And Dolores Huerta says he raped her in 1966.

Also, it is just incredible how much sociopathy and bigotry the tech industry tolerates in its founders and CEOs. If Karp was the CEO of GM or P&G he'd have been canned by the board a long time ago.
