"Parents, not politicians, should guide their children’s reading. In our school, campus, and public libraries, materials are selected by trained literacy professionals who understand child development and community needs. Their work is grounded in one clear purpose: helping young people become lifelong readers.

H.R. 7661 isn’t fundamentally about protecting kids. It’s about giving politicians broad authority to restrict whose stories are allowed on the shelves. That should concern anyone who believes in the freedom to read and the right of families to make decisions for themselves.” - ALA President Sam Helmick

"Rather than targeting librarians and teachers, Congress should invest in them. The Right to Read Act offers a better path, supporting well-staffed and well-resourced school libraries, strengthening evidence-based literacy instruction, and protecting the dedicated professionals who help young people discover books that open doors and expand horizons.

When we trust families, support educators, and protect the freedom to read, our young people thrive.” - ALA President Sam Helmick.

School librarians help children learn to love reading | opinion The state House of Representatives recently passed education bills that seek to improve reading outcomes among elementary school students.

"Once we ensure that students can read, we need to make sure students accidentally or intentionally fall in love with reading."

Teach Plus MA Policy Fellow Caroline Lovett shares how school librarians and staff can get students to become lifelong readers:

Does anyone have a Zine template or something similar already created that explains how to stay safe from ICE? I’m wanting to put something out at my high school library that kids can take. Thanks!

Fellow authors, I love you, and I know it feels like we don’t have a choice, but B&N and Am*zon both scheduled sales this week to preempt Independent Bookstore Day, a hugely vital source of income for indie bookstores. Please don’t promote their sales; please promote your local indie this week.

It’s been a great day. I didn’t even know it was #schoollibrarianappreciationday until the kids walked in with thank you cards 🥰. This is the best job-non-job I’ve ever had and I can’t wait to do it for real one day in my own library.

Just love this! Reminds me of the @drtlovesbooks.bsky.social article in Knowledgequest where he said librarians are a district’s best return on investment.

A7: Since hope is not a strategy, my vision for libraries is that we save our democracy & planet. I work on this by being obnoxiously vocal with leadership about how we impact lives daily & how libraries serve as equity engines, bringing so much value for such a small investment.

Yes. it is evidence of a much larger issue. In Philly, almost 118,000 students and there are only three certified librarians in the entire district.

Philadelphians haven’t seen or experienced libraries with librarians in a generation (maybe two).

A6: I recently found out the school where I volunteer has an HSA and a parent I know at the school decided to make a newsletter for parents. I asked that photos from our makerspace and info on how to access Pa Power Library be added to last months newsletter. #TLSkyChat

A5: Libraries are no longer needed because kids can get books from their classroom libraries. Librarians are no longer needed because kids can find everything online. I have literally heard these things, RECENTLY. #TLSkyChat

A2: I currently volunteer at a public school library in Philadelphia. The library, like pretty much all Philly schools, has no librarian. I did my first bulletin board the other month, and it included love letters written by the kids on why they love their library ❤️ #TLSkyChat

A1: I realized I wanted to be a school librarian in 2018. 7 years later and I’m finally getting my MLIS degree! My first job out of college was at @treehousebooks.org where I curated books for literacy programs and managed the giving library. I love connecting kids to books. #TLSkyChat

I would speak at as many school board meetings as I could about the loss to student learning when a librarian’s position is cut.

A tiny little zine named "A Zine About the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Why It Needs Your Help Today".

Today I made a zine to inform people about the EO that would gut the #IMLS. I was asked to share, so hey, why not share widely? You can download and print your own copies at drive.google.com/file/d/1DUsm....

If you need help folding, search for Hotdog Booklet and you should find directions easily.
