Tetradactyl is a cooler name, though! Plus it annoys paleontology sticklers. So win-win!

Is Start Trek an action franchise? Because I currently have a flip phone.

The Math That Nearly Killed Billions YouTube video by SciencePetr

This new SciCom channel is worth checking out. Especially if you like game theory and are anxious about AI.

Joyous that for 56 years, some of us aspired to these ideals.

Truly. Everyone I know who went to Hampshire is smart and weird, and I worry-- for this and many other reasons-- that we are building a version of higher education that simply has no place for the smart and the weird.

The worst boomer you know gained “AI proficiency” in about 10 minutes. This is a grift meant to make kids dependent on AI.

I love how things like this get marketed as eco-friendly recycling. Like when they dumped all those old subway cars into the ocean to build 'reefs'.

In my neighborhood, black plastic under wood chips was all the rage. In addition to being a vital source of microplastics, it has the advantage of looking terrible almost instantly.

In my eco defense...the wooden one was gifted to me used by a friend who was moving. It must be 10+ years old. I just had to replace a couple of the bottom boards.

I definitely get @moldybasil.bsky.social 's point about lead etc. Given the actual volume of veggies I grow, maybe doesn't matter much

A wooden raised bed planter next to a bag of peat moss.

I definitely get what you're saying - I've got a corrugated one and a wooden one. I did what I could to fill them with leaf mulch and household compost. But I had to cave in and buy peat moss(!) and soil to top 'em up. Still, now that I'm getting older, I see the advantage of height.

Disappointed in @hampshirecollege.bsky.social today.

A frustrating moment in a long struggle: academics & journalists who insist they share your concerns about AI, which is why they want to find a “human-centered” AI. Yes, right after we locate the human-centered nukes. I’m not looking for a better way to work with AI. I know which side I’m on.

Once-Adventurous Salmon Can’t Believe She Ended Up Moving Back To Birthplace, Having A Bunch Of Kids PENOBSCOT RIVER, ME—Recalling numerous thrill-seeking exploits and fearless endeavors, a north Atlantic salmon confirmed Monday that, having always lived an adventurous life, she couldn’t believe she ended up moving back to her birthplace and having a bunch of kids. “I was carefree and always up for going wherever the sea current took me, so never in a million years did I ever think I’d be back in this old stream starting a big family,” said the expecting mother of 2,133, noting that returning to the place where she grew up and settling down was the furthest thing from her mind while she was young and daring, traveling thousands of miles across the sea and risking the dark, seal-infested waters off Greenland in search of a little excitement. “Growing up seeing salmon after salmon give up their independent lives in the ocean to come back and have babies, I vowed to never let that happen to me—but I guess things change. Maybe after my children leave the nest, I’ll take a trip to Newfoundland and get into some trouble like I did in the good ol’ days.” At press time, sources confirmed that the salmon had died less than a week after spawning.

“I was carefree and always up for going wherever the sea current took me, so never in a million years did I ever think I’d be back in this old stream starting a big family,” said the expecting mother of 2,133…”

It's not like it's too late. Bob Dylan got one very late in his career.

At last someone else in my circle has seen it!
I don't care at all about football, but I love the details. The patch of untrodden office park lawn. The Wikipedia page for each and every apartment....

@jonbois.bsky.social is on here by the way.
