Saturday thread of stuff I've published so far this year! For your reading pleasure (or displeasure if you do not like it):
First up: a creepy story in @vol1brooklyn.bsky.social about how you can't go home again
“Why is it that the most vocal cheerleaders of generative A.I. are always the hackiest motherfreakers around? You expect studio executives to say things like “it’s going to revolutionize content” and “from a bottom-line standpoint it’s inevitable” and “I’ve finally found an instrument as cold and empty as myself,” but you’d hope that an artist would have more self-respect.”
Gift article!

I’m so close to an excellent coin slot joke but not quite there because I’m looking thirstily at my laundry hamper
I need writers to stop writing flop-sweat articles claiming “everyone” uses AI. Like baby you give away your artistic soul if you want, no one’s stopping you, but you don’t get to self-soothe on a lie. You’re not an artist anymore and other people still are, and that’s the price of your laziness
😍😍😍 Unexpectedly Perfect Rainbow is my new superhero name thank you
Pairs well with this delightful story by @magicmikewrites.bsky.social ! Greenland sharks are amazing grist.org/climate-fict...
Oh gosh, thank you! They are SO cool aren’t they? And I loved the Rundell essay.
I wrote about how Heated Rivalry is just the latest case of how publishers, with all their data, are still not able to predict what will be the next sensation. lithub.com/get-ready-fo...

While I tend not to get swept up by the Oscars, I am still sitting with wonder and delight that the film now holding the most nominations in the history of the awards is an R-Rated - 140 Minute - $100M - Period - Black - Horror - Musical.
Yessssssssss
Omg best praise ever!
Not sure if Mike is on here. But so excited to have him on the team. His weird books are a perfect fit for me!!!!!

It's release day for my book! Thank you so much to @jacklegpress.bsky.social and @fulmerford.com
I feel so powerless at the moment. Putting art into the world is one of the few things that I feel like I can do. Which in itself might be vanity, but writing a story about alcoholism and Jesus is better prayer for the world than getting drunk and trying to God in the haze, which was my old approach
So I’m honored to have a Ghost Jesus story in the gorgeous Penn Review, which was one of the first literary magazines I ever submitted to. It’s a super quick read and I hope it makes you laugh. Link in bio/hiding inside an abalone shell at the bottom of the sea.
Good news in your teens: eat cake
Good news in your twenties: drink champagne!
Good news as a newlywed: a weekend trip away!
Good news as a parent: take an uninterrupted shower, maybe light a candle?
We're double-digits! To our readers, @mbwwelch.bsky.social writes, thank you for your continued trust and support. It’s been a beautiful ten years of talking books with you, and the best has yet to come. Here’s to decade two of the Chicago Review of Books!
