We look forward to supporting communities across Washington as this new protection takes effect.
By recognizing cooling as a basic safety and habitability issue, ESSB 6200 ensures that renters have the right and the ability to stay safe and cool in their homes.
Until now, many landlords were allowed to prohibit portable cooling devices, leaving renters especially vulnerable during dangerous heat.
ESSB 6200 was introduced after the 2021 heat dome, which caused 441 excess deaths across Washington. Many of the people who died were inside their homes without access to cooling.
Thank you to the Washington Legislature for passing ESSB 6200. This important legislation protects renters’ rights to install and use portable cooling devices such as air conditioners and heat pumps during increasingly extreme heat events.
