same for my students - in the netherlands, though it’s an international group. they were put off by the characters’ age gap/relationship and also didn’t like the visual style at all. additionally, they were very critical of its use of orientalism. is that mentioned in old reviews or just recently?

I wanted to discuss Rosalind Galt’s theory of the pretty in film with my students after watching Lost in Translation and it didn’t work at all!

though if I start with films my students don’t like: Lost in Translation (ironically) really doesn’t resonate with them anymore. my students hated it and thought it was ‘ugly’. I’d love to spend more time talking about how that apparently didn’t age well

also: that radio play ending with a cameo by Scorsese himself in Killers of the Flower Moon?? could fill a whole class with just that

I’d love to assign self-congratulatory hollywood films for this - The Fabelmans is the most insufferable I’ve seen, but Babylon would be great to hate-watch too, because it tries sooo hard to be better than Singin’ in the Rain

I’m on episode 2 and I can’t take it anymore. it’s just not funny? it doesn’t have whatever s1 had. I give up

AI offering to summarize the article I just downloaded is a little like a restaurant offering to have someone eat the meal I just ordered.

once again, nobody stopped me from my impulsive actions: booked a holiday to see french speaking friends in switzerland, looked into a language class to brush up on my french, immediately received an intake phone call, panicked, and enrolled. my first class is tonight and I have homework. au secours

but, of course, I also can’t help myself, and promised my students I’d watch season 2. will I regret this?

On the bloating of contemporary TV fiction by Josette Wolthuis There is nothing new about filler or bottle episodes; when I hear the latter term, I always think of Abed (Danny Pudi) from the NBC sitcom Community complaining about how, in ‘Cooperative Calligraphy’...

now, I’m of the ‘less is more’ school of tv criticism (I even wrote a whole thing about bloating for @cstonline.bsky.social)

I discussed hoax reality show Jury Duty during a seminar on genre conventions yesterday and only then found out they made another season of what I thought was a brilliant but unrepeatable show
