same for my students - in the netherlands, though it’s an international group. they were put off by the characters’ age gap/relationship and also didn’t like the visual style at all. additionally, they were very critical of its use of orientalism. is that mentioned in old reviews or just recently?

I wanted to discuss Rosalind Galt’s theory of the pretty in film with my students after watching Lost in Translation and it didn’t work at all!
though if I start with films my students don’t like: Lost in Translation (ironically) really doesn’t resonate with them anymore. my students hated it and thought it was ‘ugly’. I’d love to spend more time talking about how that apparently didn’t age well
also: that radio play ending with a cameo by Scorsese himself in Killers of the Flower Moon?? could fill a whole class with just that
I’d love to assign self-congratulatory hollywood films for this - The Fabelmans is the most insufferable I’ve seen, but Babylon would be great to hate-watch too, because it tries sooo hard to be better than Singin’ in the Rain
