Indeed. Ages ago I had a fly crawl around on my desk which was looking really weird. I caught it under a glass and there were a bunch of pseudo scorpions riding around on it, which apparently is not an uncommon things with houseflies.

Yeah, it had a lot of what is called Euro-shmup traits. Long levels, tanky enemies, uninteresting enemy patterns, hardly avoidable enemy fire, health instead of 1 hit death, I think also inertia on the player ship. The pixelart was demoscene/dan malone inspired stuff, pretty competent and polished

Banshee is really bad, a lot of mortal sins when it comes to shmups, like the enemy bullets scrolling with the background, as well as enemies that are spawned in being offset by the scrolling among a lot of other things. Very jank game.

I have a LOT of digital WIP art, some going back 2 decades T_T. I am working them off slowly, but also doing a lot more on paper drawing these days. Doing more art, no matter what, always feels good.

Yeah, that makes sense. For a long time (like a decade or so for me personally) we used to go to the same place in Spain each year. There were 2 big arcades, as well as cabs in some bars and such, so I had exposure to arcade games from like the age of 6, though not consistently. They were a treat.

Also in a way the gameplay of Raptor looks like designed by a person who saw some screenshots of Raiden, but never actually played Raiden.

I never played Raptor back in the day when it was out. It came out after Doom, and I also had a SNES, playing stuff like Parodius and Axelay. Also had an Amiga before that and there are some actually decent shmups on that. When I played Raptor the first time it just did not impress me at all.

I gifted Raptor to a friend on steam recently for laughs, and it was hilarious watching someone who is quite good at shmups playing it for the first time.
The visuals are alright, the level design is nonexistent, total trash. Are there any good DOS only shmups?

On the other hand best DOS shmup is not a very high bar to clear. I am not a fan of Tyrian 2000 either, but it is better than Xenon 2.

That was my guess. Helm knowledge solidified. I can see how one would have a soft spot for GODS. Soft spot for Xenon 2 is unacceptable imo. Objectively garbage design going on in that one.

Where do you disagree? :D

1 day ago 1 0 1 0

Most of the Bitmap Brothers games kinda suck, a lot of them are very style over substance.
Cadaver, Speedball 2, Chaos Engine are decent, GODS is alright, Xenon 2 is absolute trash, Magic Pockets is more weird than anything imo. Z was ok, kinda unfair and shitty AI on your side.

New word for anti-aliasing dropped :D

I am not sure if i have done exactly this, but given the colour count and line angle, this approach is at least mathematically correct in a lot of cases.

Made a map for this 96 brush limitation jam. There's lots of filthy uses of brushes to get under the brush limit (for reference, the first room of E1M1 has 160 brushes) while still keeping some cute details.

100%, I started to do the lazy game devs breakout tutorial and went way overboard and overscoped it, where I don't know if i can finish it on pico-8 unless I do really ugly shit like the environment variable hack and such. T_T I need to code more

That looks very demoscene in a way. I agree that dimming it a bit would be the right way to go probably.

I want to work on pixel art again soon. Here’s something from last year.

1 year ago 997 175 15 0

Yeah ofc a CRT can change colours and such, temperature, all that. I really just meant the darkening of every other line on the actual pixels is not accurate.

This looks really awesome, nice oldschool vibes but also modern touches. Really like it.

A thing about the crt shader you used. It darkens every other line of actual pixels, which is not how scanlines work. You'd have lines which receive no signal every other line. The image does not get darkened.
