I think it’s important to be clear about the positives (genuinely useful if used with care) and negatives (ecological disaster, motor for increasing inequality, tech bro millenarian bloviation) of so-called AI, rather than using the term as a kind of catch-all dog whistle

Any proffered “argument” is therefore pretty much pro forma: the details are irrelevant. But importantly, it’s not susceptible to counter arguments because it’s actually just a decoy.

My take on this is that, like many issues around sexuality, people get particularly upset because they secretly find the idea appealing or intriguing, but can’t bring themselves to admit it (to themselves). So they overreact to compensate, and pretend there’s a larger cause at stake.
