When Nobody Was Watching

We were violent sisters
who grabbed each other by the hair
and swung with all our strength.
No strangers to kicking heads or stomachs, fists pummelling. Experts at pinching,
twisting. We wielded elbows, knees, sometimes a skipping rope, a stick.
We fought, we fled.

I'm not sure what other sisters teach each other. I've learnt to forgive what she's forgiven -how I rose in deepest hurt to lunge for her ankle, force her back down to the dirt.

How You Knew

I wrote to you that ordinary day,
you who had once cracked
your sternum wide apart for me to see

the robin lying on the cage floor,
ribs barely moving, and said to me,
If ever you need my life, come and take it.

You understood it sooner, that's all.
I'd fooled myself for months that this was just
a ruse -- a cherub with a quiverful of darts,

folie à deux, a neurochemical trick or even
vanity, that proud flower bowed over
a looking glass. But this was never just

anything. In a slip of concentration I wrote: I didn't love you, then.
And then a skylight opened for each of us.

Brian Patten 1946 - 29 September 2025

Eamon Carr and I had the pleasure of publishing beautiful poems by Brian in Capella.

I read with him in Dublin, Liverpool and Edinburgh. He was the 'marvellous boy' of the 60s and early 70s, an influential figure and a friend.

May he rest in peace.

Audrey Molloy's third poetry collection, Fallen, is available to order now: gallerypress.com/product/fall...

From the opening line of Fallen there is a sense of danger and intimacy. What does it mean to be a fallen woman? And can she ever redeem herself?
