Where will novel fire regimes threaten birds? Our paper in @natcomms.nature.com shows that most bird diversity hotspots facing future high-sev fire occur in places that historically burned at low severity - a critical mismatch. These are the spots to focus restoration.

New paper from our lab, led by Leah McTigue
We reviewed 40+ years of research on drought affects on wildlife: 66% of single-species responses were negative, only 2% positive.
As droughts intensify under climate change, wildlife are in trouble. πππ§ͺ

#Wildfire protection doesn't have to start from scratch. Using a pilot site in #Sonoma, a new report from Greenbelt Alliance shows how vineyards, woodlands, and working lands can be woven into a protective buffer.

A California study finds that human conflicts with bears, coyotes and mountains lions rise during distinct periods.
New climate-change side effect: People clash more with wildlife in drought years, says UCLA & UCDavis ecologist @kendallcalhoun.bsky.social. For each inch decrease in annual rainfall, the UCLA study finds a 2-3% jump in conflicts with pumas, bobcats, bears & coyotes newsroom.ucla.edu/releases/cli...
This project couldn't have been completed without a large collaboration of some truly stellar co-authors at CDFW and the @uofcalifornia.bsky.social (UCLA, UC Davis, and UC Berkeley). Also featuring some incredible art by: terradawsonart.com/about
Working towards building climate-resilient landscapes that buffer people and wildlife from the effects of climate change, like drought, could aid future conservation by mitigating conflict!
Overall conflict incident reports, as well as reports for 4 carnivore species, tend to increase during periods of lower precipitation. We theorize this is due to 1) decreases in resource availability during drought and 2) changes in poeple's perceptions of wildlife/nature during drought.
Our new study just came out taking a look at how drought influences human-wildlife conflict reports in California! Check it out here: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Conflict between humans & wildlife is expected to increase with drought and climate change, finds @ucdavis.bsky.social @uclaioes.bsky.social study. "If we can make it worse, then we can make it better,β says @kendallcalhoun.bsky.social. @justineasmith.bsky.social www.ucdavis.edu/climate/news...

After the 2018 #MendocinoComplexFire burned acres of oak savanna, researchers found that nearly all of the bird species in the area βincluding California #quailβpreferred burned areas over untouched habitat. #Mendocino #nativebirds #wildfire #ecosystem

The last of my PhD papers. This was a fun project uncovering species diel changes in response to wildfire.
So fortunate to work with some really special co-authors - thanks @zacksteel.bsky.social, @drpheebs.bsky.social, Haylee Oyler, and Justin! : )

Super excited to share this new pub led by @wilsonsherm.bsky.social! We used Nextdoor posts to explore human-carnivore interactions in Los Angeles. Nextdoor offers a useful data source for understanding urban human-wildlife interactions, if human biases are accounted for. Check it out! π§ͺπ
βMegafireβ β you may not like it, but you canβt avoid it.
In our new paper, we argue why a clear, size-based definition (>10,000 ha) of megafire improves research, communication, and fire management globally. π₯
