This book absolutely wrecked me -- aside from the story being told, there's something about the prose that's not just sharp and not just beautiful but somehow surgical, glinting like flames off a scalpel. I kept looking down like "Am I bleeding? Did it cut me?" Yes and yes.

Notes from a Regicide Notes from a Regicide is a heartbreaking story of trans self-discovery with a rich relatability and a science-fictional twist from award-winning author Isaac...

Notes from a Regicide is OUT TODAY! It is about an sad-sack artist who accidently sparks a revolution, or -- viewed from the other end of the telescope -- it's about how we never really know our families. It's about painting, and tarot, and journalism, and blood.

Panel 1. Me and my family are watching TV. Three women in identical costumes are dancing on the screen. We're making wontons by putting scoops of filling into square dough wrappers and folding them. My spouse is saying: "For the Spring Gala, ethnic groups from all different parts of China do traditional dances. These gals are from Inner Mongolia"

Panel 2: I am asking: "Why doesn't America have a show like this? We've got regional folk dances! It would be cool"

Panel 3: a regional folk dance is happening. It's captioned "Montana". Three cowgirls with neckerchiefs and plaid shirts are spinning lassos in the air and singing a Garth Brooks song about rodeos.

Panel 4: another regional folk dance, captioned "New Orleans". A couple is holding hands and dancing to a zydeco band. The members of the band are playing a washboard, accordion, and saxophone and singing in Cajun French.

Panel 5: Third regional folk dance, captioned "Boston". Three angry guys lean out of their car windows and flip you the bird in unison, while singing: "Where'd you learn to fuckin' drive, asshole". There is a Dunkin Donuts in the background.

A thread on birthright citizenship I wrote in 2018, that unfortunately remains relevant.

I always thought this was where it was all headed. Abolishing birthright citizenship for the non-white and non-rich. And why I teach on United States v. Wong Kim Ark every semester.

Who was Wong Kim Ark? 1/

Your periodic reminder that if you plan to hire an indexer and/or proofreader for your academic book, you should be looking for them as soon as you get your production schedule (shortly after turning in your final MS). If your publisher doesn’t tell you when to expect typeset proofs, ask!

I was lucky enough to read an early draft of this, and I'm still not over it. One of my favorite horror stories.
