We conclude miR2111 functions as a conserved signal regulating lateral root organs in response to nitrate availability, helping the plant to adapt to different lifestyles.

We found that both mir2111 and HOLT (Homologue of Legume TML) have a conserved function in regulating nitrate foraging in Arabidopsis.

Interestingly, regulation of miR2111 is inversed in Arabidopsis.

Expression of shoot derived mir2111 is restricted by nitrate supply, leading to increased LR initiations mediated by enhanced TML levels.
Grafting Experiments revealed miR2111 acting as a systemic signal.
Both miR2111 and TML were previously shown to be conserved in dicots.

We found that micro RNA 2111 is not only involved in the regulation of nodule formation but also regulates lateral root initiation.

Overexpression of miR2111 lead to decreased number of LRs in L. Japonicus mimicking the phenotype of the knockout line of it's target TML.
