I had so much fun leading a space art workshop at Redditch Library on Saturday! It was part of Redditch Astronomical Society's family day. I did a Q&A on illustrating An Unlikely Astronaut, and scifi author Chris Beckett also did a really interesting talk. Here are some of my favourite pics πβ¨

β¨β¨Just finished my oil painting of the Eagle Nebula β a year-long journey blending space, science, and art.
Iβm training at IIAS to become an astronaut, and painting helps me stay grounded while reaching for the stars.β¨ππ¨

A drawing of an eye in pastel pencils. The iris is Earth, with South America on the left and Africa on the right, and the ice of Antarctica is melting as a tear from the eye
This drawing feels appropriate for Earth Day πβ¨

This is a fascinating watch! I definitely agree that there's a magic about art created by hand that is often lost in renders. Lots of fabulous artwork features in it too πβ¨

Hi Ellen π I'm an amateur artist and I mostly do space art but I also do pet portraits from time to time. I've illustrated a children's book for Space Shuttle pilot Susan Kilrain, and I have a little dog called Conrad. I'm autistic and I help run S.H.E Choir Manchester π

A part-complete version of Van Gogh's Starry Night painting. The foreground is a small village at night with a church in the middle, which is all built in 3D. The background is a wall of thin bricks in different shades of blue
A wooden table with the in-progress Lego set, showing the instruction book and various bags of bricks
A Lego mini-figure of Vincent Van Gogh painting the Starry Night on a mini easel. He has ginger hair, a blue jacket, and brown trousers. He is holding a paintbrush and a paint palette
Some art of a different kind today! I made some progress on my Lego 'Starry Night'. Can't wait to have it finished! π

Mars just emerging from the Moon.
Mars just emerging from the Moon - a few seconds later.
Mars just moments after rising from behind the Moon.
Here are some of my better images of "Marsrise" -- right after the end of the #MarsOccultation.
Happy to say I found capture settings that simultaneously worked for both Mars and Moon. No "cheating" and stacking them separately and then copy/pasting.
Enjoy! Prints available later. π§ͺπ

I realised I never properly introduced myself since joining Bluesky! So hi π I'm a self-taught artist with a particular interest in space art, and I mainly use soft pastels and acrylics. I live in Manchester (UK), I'm a tax adviser by day, and I have a little dog called Conrad β¨

Three images of the planet Saturn: a striped brown and white ball with a distinctive ring around it. The images were taken by Kevin Earp from 2022 to 2024 showing the tilt of the planet changing over time.

Astronomy friends, what night sky events are you looking forward to in 2025? π
In π΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ Ώ we've got 2 lovely total lunar eclipses (14 Mar & 7 Sept) and a 40% partial solar eclipse (29 Mar).
I'm also super excited about Saturn temporarily losing it's rings in March π€
