Leviathan Bookstore on Instagram: "“It is the eighteenth of November. I have got used to that thought.” That’s the beginning of Solvej Balle’s ON THE CALCULATION OF VOLUME, translated by Barbara Have... In this engaging and thought-provoking novel, Solvej Balle masterfully weaves a story that explores the intricacies of time and memory through the lens of a single day that repeats over and over again...

We shared this on Instagram yesterday, but if On the Calculation of Volume teaches us anything, it's that every day is November 18th.

I’ve read two of his others and liked but not loved them. I do hear good things about this.

We are celebrating the opening of Joyce’s personal archive next year, and displaying items which reveal more about the author behind the puzzles of Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. The exhibition is in the Museum of English Rural life staircase hall from 7 Oct 2025 - 9 Feb 2026. More details to follow!

No, I haven’t. And I’ll be otherwise occupied with yet another reread of Ulysses beginning next week. I’ll be guiding a few newbies. Kinda like what you do! 😉

Joseph Luzzi makes a compelling case that a great work of art can lead a life every bit as dramatic, chequered and instructive as the artist who made it

Two translations of Dante’s Paradiso are set to come out in the year of our Lord 2025. Come July we’ll get Mary Jo Bang’s "irreverent” conclusion, published by Graywolf Press, and in August NYRB will give us D. M. Black’s second installment (anyone knows if he plans on translating Inferno?).

I have a similar path. Read the trilogy about age 25, then 15 years later and two years ago. Looking forward to these editions.
