as viewers we can absolutely look at a character who is “the last” and empathize with them, but aang’s pain over being not just the last airbender, but the last air *nomad,* the last steward of his culture, is such a defining part of his character and why he’s still a fave of mine. the writers rly-

-well as the arduous, difficult journey of rebuilding and restoring what was lost. which is why it pisses me off when fans have nuclear takes about it lmao, and a little bit of why i think the restoration of the air nation in tlok undercuts that message just a little bit

-that the air nomads had been wiped out. the series lingers on their culture in a way that is handled with such care. all the flashbacks we get of them and every tidbit of information that aang shares makes their loss hit so much harder. it’s a really poignant and brutal depiction of genocide as-
