“This wasn’t a miracle of consensus or top-down diktat. It was a triumph of mechanism design: the science of designing rules that align self-interest with the collective good.”

UCSB scientists bottle the sun with liquid battery A new bio-inspired molecule captures solar energy and releases it as heat on demand, outperforming lithium-ion batteries.

When the sun goes down, solar panels stop working. UCSB chemists have developed a solution that doesn’t require bulky batteries or electrical grids. Grace Han's team created a new material that captures sunlight, stores it within chemical bonds and releases it as heat: https://ow.ly/c7BP50YfhgX

We've finally reached a major historical crossing point. Emerging energy (wind, solar, geothermal) is now inexpensive and profitable; old arguments against them now fall flat. While legacy energy (carbon) will remain for a long time, its use will steadily decline—first slowly and then very fast.

Chart showing Fervo Energy’s geothermal drilling performance improvements over time. The graph plots depth (0-15,000 feet) against days to reach total depth (0-70 days). Multiple drilling attempts are shown with lines progressing from oldest (darkest) to newest (lightest red). The Utah site shows older wells reaching approximately 14,000 feet in 20-25 days. The Nevada site shows more recent wells reaching approximately 12,000 feet in 60-70 days, with the newest attempts demonstrating significantly improved drilling speeds. Source: Fervo Energy. Area chart showing Northern Hemisphere sea ice extent in March from 1979 to present, measured in million square kilometers. The chart shows a clear declining trend from approximately 16.5 million square km in 1979 to around 14 million square km in recent years, with notable year-to-year variability throughout the period. The overall decline represents a loss of approximately 2.5 million square kilometers of spring sea ice coverage over roughly four decades.
