In the current climate of massive right wing and far right noise, what I find most encouraging in this chart is that (generally perceived) centre/left parties are steadily increasing their share.

Kyse on yhteiskunnallisen hyvinvoinnin sabotaasista.
A hundred years ago, the U.S. had a nationwide network of short-line railroads that connected most urban and rural communities. By the 1940s, most of it had been dismantled ... by the barons of the auto and oil industries. 😑
Watch how swiftly fake quotes get attributed to “S. Drimmer” now.
Thing is, this is exactly what ChatGPT was designed to do. Namely, jackhammer the grounds of truth beneath our feet. Whether the product is “good” or not is irrelevant. Its purpose is to remove people from acts of discernment.

Yesterday was the national Evacuee's Day in #Finland. Remembering those who had to leave their homes, often hastily and only with what they could carry, and start life anew as internal #refugees because of the unjust aggression of the Kremlin.
About 420 000 people. Over 11% of the population.
Last month I had the pleasure of recording a segment for this 10-part essay series on BBC Radio 3 with the one and only @jerrybrotton.bsky.social . 'The Death and Life of Christopher Marlowe' starts tonight - don’t miss it; it promises to be sensational. 🕵️
Yet another underestimated problem in current academia: hard to fight redundancies of previously secure jobs if for the past two decades your entire sector has profited of the massive job precarity of junior entrants.
My book Military Revolution and the Thirty Years War (2023) looks at four military institutions - feudal cavalry services, militias, regular armies, and war commissariats - and investigates how they evolved, mutated, stagnated, or withered in 1618-1648. Open access at hup.fi/books/m/10.3...
Is forcing dominant websites such as Deutsche Bahn's int.bahn.de to show competitors' trains always a good thing?
It can make things very hard for passengers, here's why...

The cyberattack on The British Library in October 2023 knocked out ebooks and almost ever other computer thing there for years.
Ebooks just came back. They were knocked out everywhere using the BL’s license (legal deposit libraries I think? More libraries?)
Distributed physical copies matter.
if I ran research funding, applicants would write a one-page summary of their idea and post it to a central pool from which different funders could then invite more developed proposals
Hello, vote Green
I really appreciate @elizabethwithaz.bsky.social's reflections on how she explored the social impacts of technology with her students by introducing them to the people - the ghost workers - whose labor makes “AI” systems possible.

Silmiinpistävää on myös pudotus luottamuksessa Suomen hallitukseen. Marinin hallitukseen luotti vielä lähes 70 %, Orpon-Purran hallitukseen luottaa vain 45 %.
Suomalainen yhteiskuntakin on muuttunut selvästi epäoikeudenmukaisemmaksi Orpon-Purran hallituskauden aikana.

As a PhD researcher, as someone who actually cares a lot about my research and academic freedom, I find this all so deeply, deeply tedious.
The actual threats to academic freedom are coming from defunding our universities – as anyone actually in the sector can tell you.
Lindtman: "Suomi voisi ottaa taloudessa oppia Espanjasta."
Lindtman: "Sdp on huolissaan velasta ja sitoutunut tiukkaan säästökuuriin."
Kumpi se siis on?
Koska Espanjassa on lisätty julkisia, tuottavia investointeja ja velka-aste on kääntynyt laskuun.

Okay he just bodied David Brooks who apparently in a mid 00s column tried argue for ending social welfare programs based partly on social conflict behavior models for great apes (!?!?). I’m 90% done and definitely recommend this book.
And so I will circle around to my constant point: the instinct for a comforting aristocracy is endemic in the human populace, and the job of democracy is to ruthlessly destroy it whenever it appears. Not build a political, legal and moral (prosperity gospel) framework which fucking encourages it.
Lindtman: voisi oppia, ei aio oppia
