Original image with safe area lines

I've done a bit of math. In this image, the red lines represent the maximum area that would've been visible in the original '93 analog broadcast; the blue lines represent the minimum area that would've been visible (every CRT TV differed). 🙂

Exactly. That stuff is outside the area that would’ve been viewable on the original broadcast.

Apple discontinues the Mac Pro with no plans for future hardware - 9to5Mac It’s the end of an era: Apple has confirmed to 9to5Mac that the Mac Pro is being discontinued. It has...

It's dead, Jim.

Back in the day, I used to love these things… Over time I owned at least two, maybe three of them? I remember the time when these bad boys were the gold standard — and kinda the only real game in town — when it came to cutting and finishing a theatrical feature.

Similar to what filmmakers are dealing with re: frame interpolation on “modern” TVs. The argument that viewers can “do whatever they want” with films they watch is hilarious, of course, since viewers aren’t doing a goddam thing. They’re just letting slop technology enshittify movies they’re watching

Have you watched "Spearhead" on Blu-ray? I love the fact that they preserved the filmed opening titles (including the title "zoom") from the original prints!

Excellent way to start the show. Mine would be "Ribos Operation"—my 1st—but everyone has their own! "Spearhead" is a brilliant place to begin… the first color (and the ONLY shot entirely on film)! Plus, you're only two stories away from the theme-song "sting"… which defined the series from then on!

Wait… “Spearhead” to “War Games”? So you start with Pertwee, go through to the end, and then go back and watch Hartnell/Troughton?

Scum and Villainy Cantina

Amazing night… starting w/ incredible new doc BEAM ME UP SULU… followed by after-party-ing at SCUM AND VILLAINY. But the perfect nightcap was watching the launch of a Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg, leaving a brilliant fiery trail across the starry sky. A fitting ending to a "Trek" evening, indeed!

The Paradox of Gilmore Girls and The Sopranos

The Paradox of Gilmore Girls and The Sopranos

Amazing. But… this hasn't got s--t on Doctor Who. The 1988 DW story "Remembrance of the Daleks" — set in November 1963 — includes a scene in which the first ever (1963) episode of DW begins to play on a TV. So the DW TV series exists within its own universe. 🤯

This really came to a head with PICARD season 3. The sheer volume of people “casually” announcing on social media that they’d seen it in advance rubbed many, many folks the wrong way.

When I was very small and went to school in fall ’81, I had an assignment to draw my favorite memory from the past summer. I drew (a very simple, long-lost version of) this image. My teacher came over and said “Is that Indiana Jones?!” She proceeded to tell me how cool that was, and gave me an A. 👍🏼

Yes! If you’re in a “creative” field (maybe true for other fields, I wouldn’t know) the WORST thing you can do for your career is to stay home, avoid events, pass on attending parties, etc. The friends you happen to make today WILL BECOME the people who hire you (or at least work with you) tomorrow.
