Thank you, Connie Ballmer! I’m proud to say @wtgrantfdn.bsky.social is also a supporter of @npr.org (not quite at your level). You may know us from our NPR tagline, “The William T. Grant Foundation, supporting research to improve the lives of young people!”

Congrats to @wtgrantfdn.bsky.social grantee @eneblett.bsky.social on delivering the Roberta Simmons Lecture at #SRA2026!

Rep. Chu brings up the fact that FEMA is approving disaster requests from Republican states but not Democratic states.
She asks Vought about it, and he basically says it's not a problem. "No one has looked harder at FEMA funding than us."
In other words, impoundment was never legal. The first time it was adjudicated, they lost. The ICA didn't make impoundment illegal. It was always illegal.
Vought is now illegally impounding tens of billions of dollars.
The Russ Vought hearing is starting now. It's the first time Vought has testified before Congress since his confirmation hearings, so it's the first time Congress will be able to question him about the onslaught of illegal budgetary actions he has undertaken. I'll be posting in this thread.
Must-see TV: a congressman holding the OMB director to account.
Really good example here as to how Vought (and Republicans) lie about fraud in Medicaid and SNAP, while completely ignoring $725 billion in annual tax fraud (which is ~total federal spending on Medicaid and SNAP annually).
🎉 The Foundation is delighted to announce the newest class of William T. Grant Scholars. Scholars receive $425,000 to execute rigorous five-year research plans that stretch their skills and knowledge into new disciplines, content areas, or methods. Read the announcement: https://bit.ly/4dJYcrw
Making tenure count, for MSNOW I wrote about my employer, The University of Iowa, creating a center for intellectual freedom. It's a reactionary project built on decades of conservative propaganda about higher ed.
Happening now: “Learning from “failure”: Exploring challenges in unsuccessful research-practice partnerships.” So refreshing to see an honest look at what doesn’t work, and why!
I’m looking forward to seeing many of you at #AERA2026 this week.

I can’t say what it’s like today, but I flew out of terminal 4 last week and the wait was 5 minutes. Touchless, precheck, Clear, and standard were all open and running smoothly.
Thanks Bob Kim @edlawcenter.bsky.social for your incisive and evidence-aligned letter in today’s @nytimes.com on the limits of school choice to meet our nation’s education challenges.
Important context for understanding Mississippi’s impressive progress in early reading.
In Texas @scottbraddock.bsky.social is reporting that 76% of school voucher applicants are already in private school.
A year ago this upcoming Wednesday I warned the Texas legislature about this👇

”This is a world of compensations; and he who would *be* no slave, must consent to *have* no slave. Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves; and, under a just God, can not long retain it.”
Enforcement-related trauma has long-term effects on the outcomes and opportunities of children in immigrant families. "For the sake of our kids, this must stop."
We're proud of grantee @sorophd.bsky.social for speaking out today: www.nytimes.com/2026/02/11/o...

Thank you to the Office of General Services for hosting an incredible celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and legacy yesterday. As I shared in my remarks, Dr. King’s idea of building a Beloved Community reminds us that belonging and mutuality don’t happen by accident,

The ASA IPM section is excited to launch our new participatory budgeting initiative where section members can propose new initiatives or projects that the full membership will then vote on. The IPM Section has dedicated $1,500 to be allocated across the proposed projects that receive the most votes by section members. You can read through the IPM Participatory Budgeting Rulebook linked here for more information about what kinds of projects qualify for funding, how the voting process will work, and the overall timeline for this funding cycle. To submit a proposal, please use the following link: IPM PB: Proposal Submission Site. The last day to submit a proposal is January 30, 2026. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Fabian Pfeffer at fabian.pfeffer@Imu.de.
Do you have a good idea of how to spend up to $1,500 to help the community of inequality researchers?
Then submit it by Jan 31 (here: forms.gle/2j6GaCwvS77B...) to be included in the new participatory budgeting process of the ASA Inequality, Poverty, and Mobility section.
