This is an important new Opinion in @plosglobalpublichealth.org; the authors write about the complexities and important considerations we must take as we seek to understand the causes of maternal mortality worldwide, but I think what I appreciate most about this piece is the focus the lives lost...

Calling on the #publichealth community on BlueSky to share this far and wide!

I was just told that I have to remove “climate” from the title of an ongoing grant if I want to keep it. And publications from that grant cannot include “climate” and other forbidden words. I can’t believe I’m writing this from the United States of America. #AcademicSky
End female genital mutilation! Every woman and girl has the right to live free from violence and harmful practices.
Today is the International Day to #EndFGM
Female genital mutilation (FGM) is an extreme form of discrimination, violates #HumanRights, and leads to serious health harms for millions of women and girls.
It must be prevented! bit.ly/3WNPkYm

Tuberculosis (TB) is associated with deprivation and is more common in large urban areas. Among UK-born people, TB is more common in those experiencing homelessness, drug or alcohol dependency, and contact with the criminal justice system. www.gov.uk/government/n...
I oversaw global health programs at @USAID.
They reached 100s of millions of people, added 6 extra years to the lifespan of children in partner countries, and were eradicating health threats worldwide.
What insanity and cruelty to break that.
Delivering ‘corridor care’ became my everyday experience as a junior doctor. It drove me to move into public health in the hope of changing the system for the better. Not sure I’ve managed that yet, but hoping I will one day.
Despite the ceasefire, #Lebanon's health system faces immense strain:
🔸 Over 1 million displaced people have returned to their homes
🔸 Thousands of civilians require reconstructive surgeries and physical rehabilitation
🔸 The country hosts 1.5 million refugees from neighboring #Syria

Spent a long time last night reading this report in full and reading more about migrant families and maternity care. One situation that struck me was a previous stillbirth that was not followed up in subsequent pregnancy - & the woman went onto have another stillbirth. Opportunities missed. So sad.
He’s amazing! 🤩 Also organised the whole thing for us
