The Trump administration called Federal TRIO programs 'relics of the past', saying college access isn't really a problem anymore.
So we asked Latino students what they thought. Spoiler - they disagreed. Check out my new blog to see their responses.

The budget reconciliation bill made one of the largest cuts to higher education in U.S. history which may force students — especially Latino students — to abandon advanced education degrees.

The ending of the story nails it -
"And instead of tracking the declining diversity in higher education, Trump wants to use admissions data to threaten colleges and universities. If the new directive produces bad data that is easy to misinterpret, he may get his wish."
Let's be real, this is intentional misuse of what will be poorly collected data by an understaffed and under-resourced Department of Education.

Having came out during college, it as been incredibly validating to be able to research and name the dynamics queer Latinx students face within and outside of the classroom.

@weareunidosus.bsky.social - “As Congress advances a federal budget this week, it's critical they protect Pell Grants. Half of Latino undergrads rely on them to afford college and climb the economic ladder. Cutting these grants would set families — and the U.S. economy — back.” bit.ly/3EL8aK4

Let's be clear, these proposals to undercut educational opportunities and economic mobility are unpopular with Latino voters.
- 62% oppose efforts to decrease funding for Pell Grants
- 60% oppose eliminating the Department of Education
- 60% oppose allowing immigration enforcement in public schools
Ah, I don't recall seeing @econroy.bsky.social post but also see his posts on this too.
TLDR most credible people agree these policies would harm lower SES and working class borrowers.
The Federal Pell Grant provides critical financial aid to low-income students, including Latinos, making higher education a more attainable possibility.

"Unless higher education discovers its collective nerve and collective voice, those who “threaten the very mission of the university and its values of free inquiry” will get precisely what they want."
“The Trump administration’s action to essentially eviscerate the Department of Education is yet another short-sighted, reckless and destructive decision that will shortchange the future well-being of all Americans."

This is who was fired from the union workforce at the Department of Education yesterday. Every single number is a person who served the nation and whose life was wrongly disrupted. That's the first tragedy, but it's clearly not the only one.
Someone had way too much fun writing this article

ICYMI: Latino colleges are clearly aspirational in their views of college degree as a driver of economic mobility. However, this promise must be safeguarded from the threat imposed by the student debt crisis. Check out @thesbpc.bsky.social’s Aissa and my new blog.
