Tell Your Senators: Support Humane Reforms in the FY27 Appropriations Bill! Every year, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has a proven track record of removing thousands of wild horses and burros from their homes on public lands—only to warehouse them in overcrowded government holding facilities. The numbers tell the story: In Fiscal Year 2025, the agency removed 7,853 wild horses and burros from the range, while administering just 921 fertility control treatments—a humane, science-backed tool that helps manage herd populations on the range. Despite direction from lawmakers and the National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board to increase application of fertility control, the agency has refused. Without the increasing use of fertility control in management, wild horses and burros will continue being funneled into this broken system of removals and warehousing, which ultimately consumes the vast majority of the program's budget. We have a chance to change that. Right now, a letter is circulating in the U.S. Senate calling for the inclusion of language for the Fiscal Year 2027 Interior Appropriations bill that could steer wild horse and burro management in a more humane and common-sense direction. But they need to hear from you.
