Listening to this was a reminder that ChatGPT's tendency to end every response with a question has been annoying me a lot recently.

20/12/2025: “I think a sub-45 [10K] is within reach in 2026.” (www.linkedin.com/posts/andrew...)
So it proved, as I beat my 45:38 from then with a 44:45 today — a 53-second improvement.
Oh dear. The Copilot button has moved position.
The worst thing is we now have fewer selectable cells because of it.
Who asked for this?
Remember the days when you had to scour the web for a dummy dataset just to test something in Excel?
No longer.
With Copilot, you can generate one in seconds.
Go to Home > Copilot and describe what you want.
The result will depend on your prompt.

Excel’s calculation engine just got upgraded. 🥳
Personally, I wish they’d do away with the clock change twice a year. It causes far more hassle than it’s worth, messes with our circadian rhythm, and has been shown to increase road accidents.
It’s also a good reminder why you should always store dates and times in UTC!
In the early hours of tomorrow, the clocks go forward an hour in the UK and across Europe.
Here, it happens at 01:00, although it might be 02:00 or 03:00 for you.
That means any UK time between 01:00 and 01:59 on 29/03/2026 doesn’t exist.
Sometimes the janky way… is the only way.
Went to the theatre tonight to watch some educational AI comedy by @lievenscheire.bsky.social.
I thought his show was excellent. It was great to hear him talking about chatbots, agents, and neural networks with lots of humour thrown in along the way.
Great stuff.

After an exciting start to the year, which saw a couple of new functions announced, it's now back to Copilot.
February's 'What's New in Excel' is out, but it still doesn't have an updated cover image with the new logo.
I've generated one nevertheless…

Earlier today, I caught up with the latest episode of Unpivot.
Host Wyn Hopkins introduced a new feature called 'Worth a follow', and I was delighted to be Mark Proctor's choice. He said I'm one of his "favourite social media writers", and Giles Male said I've been a "good collaborative whinger"! 😄
During one of my daily doom and gloom scrolls of the news, I stumbled across something more positive…
There was an Excel article!
Another, I hasten to add. There were a couple recently on BBC News I posted about. This time it’s The Guardian.
Congratulations, Diarmuid!
After reading last month about a spelling mishap at stationer TGJones — where stationery was misspelt on its own shopfront — I felt compelled to investigate.
And investigate I did.
Just when you thought 67 was 𝘴𝘰 𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳, it's found its way into my local bakery.
Ultimately, it's merely a biscuit with some colourful icing on. But I thought I'd buy it just to make this post.

I'm sure many of you share my enthusiasm as we look forward to another year of game-changing Copilot updates in Excel.
Perhaps one of those game-changing updates will be to handle basic arithmetic…
Great to see Excel getting more attention on BBC News, a little more than a month after the World Championships were featured.
Excel is indeed hard to quit. So much so that companies are continuing to struggle to pull employees away from it.
It's here to stay! 😄
