once again pulling my hair out because no legacy game franchise wants to avoid its original gameplay and aesthetic identities as much as Final Fantasy does because Square Enix has gaslit themselves into thinking people hate those things

(I'm mostly talking about how ff16's sales are a fraction of usual ff sales figures despite how desperate square was to appeal to mainstream action game and game of thrones tastes)

I do think 12 is very ff in a different way (12 is like 4 in that it says "final fantasy is star wars") and 13 has moments but as these games go the weird feeling that square is actively AVOIDING the vibe of the first 10 ffs only grows (especially the core vibe seen in like 9)

It kills me cus most of FF7 is very ff and yeah square corporate is like "the midgar bit is all of FF7 right" (and then "fans" also say that) and they try and do that over and over for 20 years and fail. And then ff7remake is the most ff-like FF game since uhh 10 #whyisthat

I miss it so much. FF9 was so long ago now and it feels like FF has never been allowed to be anywhere near that FF again since. It has moments sure but they never ever celebrate or embrace the core vibe of the series like dragon quest is still allowed to.

dgmw I think they all look great. It's the fact that ryuji and the guys get to enjoy expressing their inner rebel while the girls admit feeling humiliation at their own outfits that says a hell of a lot about how the writers see women.

yeah.. yeah. 3's vibes are so immaculate but as things are I think I generally prefer ff1 just cus 1 is so much easier for fun casual playthroughs

yeye ff4 has always been its most true self in every iteration. Meanwhile FF3 has square enix going "guys the famicom version did not satisfactorily show off how amazing eternal wind is" every time they rerelease it
