Numbers of Chequered Skipper (bont dikkopje, C palaemon) can fluctuate a lot, but the last few years have been bad for the species with a decline of 70% since 1990. Also distribution (=occupancy) declined with 30%. As a species of moist woodland it has a problem with dry summers.
Density of Brimstone (citroenvlinder, G rhamni) on Dutch Butterfly Monitoring transects this spring higher than in spring 2025, but also higher than in summer 2025 (and these are the same butterflies as they hibernate as adult). They probably hibernated (or aestivated) quickly after emerging.
The increase of the Orangetip (oranjetipje, A cardamines) on Dutch Butterfly Monitoring transects (=populatie) is partly due to the expansion of the species (=occupancy) by 30%, but also the density has gone up between 1990 and 2025. If you go out now, you have a good chance of seeing this butterfly
The last 20 years the 2nd generation of the Dingy Skipper (Bruin dikkopje, E tages) in NL has become larger and larger, with the peak of the first generation moving weeks forward.
The mean flight date of the Orangetip (A cardamines) is now more than two weeks earlier than in 1990 on Dutch Butterfly Monitoring transects, though there are large fluctuations from year to year, depending on spring weather.
Field margin with wildflowers that can support butterflies in arable farmland
Livestock grazing is essential to maintaining grasslands in the mountains of Europe. Extensive cattle grazing has been shown to be the most beneficial but any extensive system is good
Grassland butterflies are declining across Europe, but how do we reverse that trend? We have just produced a report with some simple guidance to land managers and policy makers on how to 'Bend the curve' and help increase butterflies and other pollinators. www.bc-europe.eu/webpage.php?...

Update Maas

The latest European Grassland Butterfly Indicator is out. It shows that grassland butterflies have declined by 47% since 1991, indicating a huge loss of grassland biodiversity. The data come from 16,150 transects & 15,000 volunteers. We are calling for urgent action. www.bc-europe.eu/documents/69...
Anything known about the trend in heath? There, I see a lot, maybe because of nitrogen depisition?
Putting this in context:
About 75% of Europe's Whimbrel breed in Iceland.
Over 50% of Europe's Dunlin.
About 50% of Europe's Golden Plover.
About 20% of Europe's Redshank.
SCARY!

Venlo was puik, woensdag 👌
I’m afraid things simply don’t change fast in the province of Limburg….
The slow expansion of the Marbled Fritillary (braamparelmoer, Brenthis daphne) in NL has surprised me, in B and D it easily moves 10-20km per year. Even in de SE the density is still relatively low. Apparently the quality of the habitat in NL is not good enough to move further north.
Front cover of the European Butterfly Red List, showing Polyommatus humedasae. The report can be downloaded at https://www.bc-europe.eu/webpage.php?name=red-list-butterflies-2025
The new European Butterfly Red List is published today, with worrying findings. Over 1/4 (28%) of Europe’s 442 species are threatened with extinction or are close to being so. The situation is far worse for our 148 endemic species, 40% are now threatened or nearly so www.bc-europe.eu/webpage.php?...
#LUBACH
Now the 2025 field season for butterflies has come to an end, it is a good moment to look back at the great work of the recorders of Dutch Butterfly Monitoring transects. Almost 400,000 butterflies counted in 2025 on 1372 locations, 8,5 million since 1990 on 212,327 km. Thanks for all hard work!

Saw only a few this year, but actually one today in Lomm
Same in the netherlands
