🧵 Just out in Cell after more than 10 years in the making!

Plants and animals evolve radically different body plans.

Do they also operate under fundamentally different molecular evolutionary constraints during organ formation?

Major alleles of CDCA7 shape CG methylation in Arabidopsis thaliana - Nature Plants This genome-wide association study identifies CELL DIVISION CYCLE-ASSOCIATED PROTEIN 7 (CDCA7) as a regulator of DNA methylation in natural Arabidopsis thaliana populations. CDCA7 binds the chromatin ...

Cool and neat story led by my former PhD student @p-bourguet.bsky.social Congrats Pierre and crew!! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

A mosaic of modular variation at a single gene underpins convergent plumage coloration The reshuffling of genomic variation from multiple origins is an important contributor to phenotypic diversification, yet insights into the evolutionary trajectories of this combinatorial process and ...

A TE insertion controls throat colour in wheatears. The gene involved (ASIP) is the same one that is epigenetically affected by an IAP insertion the famous Avy mice.

As if we needed more reasons to love TEs.

If that’s the case, given the current publication process, the successive use of the tool by authors and then by reviewers could significantly slow things down by increasing the amount of work required from authors to satisfy the system. How do you see this issue?

But I’m wondering about a possible runaway effect that using such a tool might create. Suppose the paper is improved by taking into account these first comments, wouldn’t the AI still tend to identify major and minor gaps, even in revised versions?

Hi Oded, just tried it on a paper. I find the analysis overall very relevant, it’s impressive.

Plant mobile domain protein–DNA motif modules counteract Polycomb silencing to stabilize gene expression Nature Plants - This study reveals that plant proteins MAIL1, MAIN and MAIL2 function as anti-silencing factors that maintain active gene expression. They bind specific DNA motifs to prevent...

Our paper is finally out in Nature Plants. MAIL proteins antagonize Polycomb-mediated silencing. Full text here: rdcu.be/eJisX

Last good news from 2024!
Our latest paper on TE-derived small RNAs is finally out! It reveals a beautiful buffering mechanism involving epigenetics, chromatin organization, and pathogen resistance. A great collaboration with @plantevolution.bsky.social, don’t miss it!

Diagram of somatic TE insertions across the A. thaliana genome

In our latest @biorxiv-genomic.bsky.social preprint, we describe our approach to use PacBio HiFi reads to detect somatic TE transposition -- good enough to detect rare events that are present in only single cells. Led by Andrea Movilli.

Histone H3 lysine 4 methylation recruits DNA demethylases to enforce gene expression in Arabidopsis - Nature Plants This study revealed that targeting H3K4me3 via the H3K4 methyltransferase SDG2 activates gene expression and removes DNA methylation by recruiting DNA demethylases. Conversely, the removal of H3K4me3 ...
