Also, yes, the cockpit image is another Dubious Max Original. Enjoy, Luke Eddy.

And if you really dig into this post, you'll find some truly deep cut references, like the excellent Warhammer: Diskwars!
Precipice draws upon a lot of experiences from across my gaming history. Today, I discuss the role of control friction in piloting simulators (analog and digital), what that has to do with X-Wing and MechWarrior 3, and how all that led to Precipice's design goals!

The very good flowchart graphics in this article are courtesy @meanpomelo.bsky.social, because my originals were distinctly... noodlier.
I wrote an article about how skills function in the Cosmere RPG and now Plotweaver RPG, and how talents disrupt that dynamic to make your character feel awesome!

Aww, thanks!
I'm always envious of @maxcbrooke.bsky.social's ability to so eloquently break down abstract concepts like this. His article here about our philosophy on the Cosmere RPG (and now Plotweaver) is worth a read.
I've never played GKR: Heavy Hitters, but I remember that back in the day, someone had it around the office and it looked very cool! Love those Weta Workshop designs!
Ever have a board game with amazing miniatures that made you want to use them in more games? GKR:Heavy Hitters has some amazing mechs - and Precipice from @maxcbrooke.bsky.social is going to be the answer!
Highly detailed art of Madred, Dukat, and Martok in front of a starfield with blue and pink nebula. At the top is the Star Trek Into the Unknown Glory and Zeal Campaign Expansion title logo. At the bottom yellow text reads “Pre-Order Now!”
Challenge your political strategy, exploratory innovation, and battle resolve in a new campaign arc with the Star Trek: Into the Unknown - Glory and Zeal Expansion! Unique officers, new equipment, and iconic ships continue the fantastic gameplay in this second expansion!
It's not actually relevant to anything, but my favorite "critical table" entry is still from, I believe, the Rolemaster critical fumble tables. "You trip over an imaginary deceased turtle." That's still in my lexicon, decades later.
I love it when a mecha series shows detailed damage in battle.
Today, I discuss why its the *defender* who assigns damage in Precipice, and how that relates to my time working with
@afischergames.bsky.social
on Dark Heresy 2nd Edition crit tables!

I've been doing mecha design work for this project!
What does Precipice have to do with my history of making Warhammer/D&D Miniatures out of Sculpey (not well) and then taking over the college dorm lounges to play giant games?
Read on and find out!

Max Brooke, who you might know as one of the designers on X-Wing, has a new minis-game project in the works!
This system is able to handle mech combat of all kinds, and is super dynamic and fun. Definitely worth keeping an eye on as he develops it!
It was being used to illustrate the range of Precipice's mechanics, but everyone can all disagree over whether I placed Voltron: Legendary Defender correctly vis-a-vis Pacific Rim and Evangelion. I'm not sure I even agree with this order.
Incendiary posts in the work Discord.
Amazing!

Having you on the writing team has been a huge asset, and I'm really excited to show people what you've been cooking up!
It has been awesome having you on this project - you've brought exactly the sort of unique perspective that the worlds of this game need!
I can finally talk a bit about a project I’ve been part of for a little while now. Welcome to Precipice, a mecha miniatures game where you can use your own stuff and explore varied worlds.
There’s so much cool stuff still To reveal!

Just before Adepticon, I met up with the awesome @crabbok.bsky.social to show him an early demo of Precipice! If you want to get a quick look at the gameplay of the Open Alpha, check out his video:

I’ve been lucky enough to be part of the team developing settings for this game - More details soon, but for now check out the alpha test rules!
This project is the fruition of years of dreaming and months of work. The game I've been threatening to make for years.
And I've found a fantastic group of people to help make it. Over the next few weeks, I'll be sharing more about the (ongoing) design process, stories, and worlds of Precipice.

In the Tapestry... The universe is full of possibilities. Some are scary, but you shouldn't fear the unknown. Curiosity is rewarded far more often than it's punished. No one's pulling the strings. No gods decide our fate. When the universe seems cold and uncaring, it's our job to create warmth and meaning. We write our own stories. There's no "chosen one." No group of people is superior to others, and no one is born a villain. Any path is open to people with the right training and mindset. Ties are what bind us. As an individual, your luck can be measured in the community you find and the connections you forge. Seek the support of others and don't split the party. Some threads can't be broken. A few bonds--true love, families, close friendships--are strong enough to cross realities and ripple into infinity. Stories are power. We discover who we want to be through stories, and become the stories we tell about ourselves. Magic draws on emotions to weave narratives that change the world.
Our Consulting Designer @maxcbrooke.bsky.social urged us to define "values" underlying the Tapestry setting lore and system design. Here's the list, which I think is pretty cool.
The art here, by Mœbius, is just for inspiration. But if you know any artists with a similar style, we're hiring!
