The Port Authority quietly added and raised new fees and tolls to help pay for the new $11B Port Authority Bus Terminal - so quiet even its own users didn't know.
Its biggest user - NJ Transit - is facing a 60% increase in costs in FY27, compared to FY25.

The World Cup is coming. So is congestion and pollution. A call from our president, Johan Andrade, on the need for getting Hudson County World-Cup-ready with quick build bus lanes, bike lanes, and pedestrian corridors before it's too late.
Assembly Member Emerita Torres wants to stop highway expansions near public housing and asthma hot spots.
The highways between Boston and Foxborough “failed” last week w/standstill traffic, so soccer fans walked hours to get to Gillette.
What will happen if fans walk to MetLife for World Cup?
A critical question for a stadium designed for cars but is stitching together a “public transport first” plan.

Gov. Mikie Sherrill has charged NJ TRANSIT with coming up with a plan for customer improvements.
Riders have heard this before -- can they trust that they'll get sustained improvements over time?
My story:
The Turnpike Authority's traffic analysis said they did not need the Marist High School property for a new 440 on-ramp because another was just 5 blocks away. They eminent domained it and acquired it anyways. But in current plans, the property will no longer be used for the unneeded on-ramp.
"Blair Lorenzo, Executive Director, Effective Transit Alliance "This is a great decision by Gov. Sherrill, one which should have always been a no-brainer. Urban highway widenings have no place in the 21st century, and all too often, the need for structural replacement is used as an excuse for hidden road expansion. This is the right call not only for New Jersey, but for the entire metropolitan area." "
Last week, NJ Gov Sherrill announced that the NJ Turnpike would replace the Newark Bay Bridge with only one span, finally ending a wrongheaded highway expansion.
Urban highway widenings have no place in the 21st century, & ETA joins our partners in applauding this decision.

ICYMI, our press release on last week's Turnpike Trap victory and full cancellation of any widening. We are proud of the diverse coalition that stood together in NJ for clean air, safer streets, and investments in mass transit. Check out the quotes from our many allied groups.
More to come from me about this victory - but for now, I'll just remark that for the last 6 years, so many people in power told us we couldn't win this. SO MANY PEOPLE. I'm really proud of every single person who stood up and joined this fight in whatever capacity they could.
I’ve got a wild proposal for you. Allow localities to tax highways much as water infrastructure is allowed to be taxed. DOT would be a lot more cautious in its road building if it had to pay taxes on each lane mile.
NJ Gov. Sherrill wins praise for killing plan to expand highway headed to Holland Tunnel gothamist.com/news/nj-gov-...
Sherrill has fully scaled down the project:
• $4B in savings. Total project cost from $10.7B -> $6.7B
• One bridge, not two
• Priority for a repair-first approach for the rest of the extension; no new lanes
NJ Turnpike Authority Executive Director Kris Kolluri framed the decision to downsize the Newark Bay Bridge project as "fiscally prudent."

The Sherrill Administration's first transportation policy decision is a winner
A week after opponents pitched their one bridge option, Gov. Sherrill downsized the controversial NJ Turnpike twin bridge project over Newark Bay www.nj.com/news/2026/03...

Donald Trump's attempt to kill congestion pricing just failed in court — and in spectacular fashion.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: The cameras are staying on.

There were 3 different fatal crashes on the NJ Turnpike this weekend. One of the victims from one of the crashes was a 5-month-old baby.
All of these crashes occurred before the winter storm.

The OECD’s new Road Safety Annual Report offers a reminder that the US approach toward traffic safety is an abject failure.
Americans are >2x more likely to die on the road than those in South Korea, Israel, Australia, Spain, and other rich countries.

Ongoing delays & service disruptions are part of the daily reality on NJ Transit, & riders will see another fare hike come July.
Thanks, Talia-- you're right: New Jersey CAN be better. A statewide Fair Fares program can offer transit that serves all!
