After my wife's death in a car crash in 2007, I became dad and mom for our four-year-old, who was critically injured in the crash. My whole world was turned upside-down, but the thought of being the best dad I could held me together. Now I see her success and happiness as my greatest accomplishment.

Star-Raker (1978)
The story of spaceflight told through missions and programs that did not happen - that is, the great majority of them.
In keeping with my recent theme of space shuttle stuff that didn't happen, here's Star-Raker.
It was proposed in the 1960s as a candidate NASA Space Shuttle design, then resurfaced in the 1970s as part of plans to build giant Solar Power Satellites.

84 NASA missions at risk under new proposal
Proposed NASA cuts would reduce NASA’s workforce by thousands and cancel over 50 space missions.
#JournoRequest I am working on a story for @iflscience.com on the NASA cuts in Trump's budget proposal 🔭🧪
Is your mission directly affected, or will your research be affected if a mission is ended or cancelled? I want to hear from you; we will keep you anonymous.

Dream Chaser actually looks a lot like an old Soviet design to me. But I agree, I'd like to see at least one of these shuttle designs in operation.

Two hooded figures with lamps approach a moonlit, isolated cottage.
A woman answers the door.
We have come for the child, says the hooded figure
So soon? she asks
It is time, says the hooded figure.
The woman is distraught. We should never have got him a library card!
What is done cannot be undone, says the hooded figure
We couldn’t see the harm! We just wanted him to enjoy reading!
For most, it ends there, says the hooded figure, turning away and walking into the wilderness
Oh lord, What have I done! says the woman,
the child walks past her and out into the darkness with them.
Do not cry mother.
I am a writer now.

3D image shows a close-up of very blocky and fractured material at the bottom of an impact crater on Mars.
HiRISE 3D: Fractured Floor Materials within a Crater in Arabia Terra
This anaglyph shows an interesting pattern of fractures. It may be incipient chaos formation. A digital terrain model can help to figure out what's going on.

Not sure if this is a joke or not. I could see someone like Isaacman actually saying that.
Test it on the Moon, sure - and if it doesn't work, what then?

Enhanced color image shows a close-up of extensive, large dunes in the north polar region of Mars. There is seasonal, bright ice on the slipface of many of the dunes, and dark patches between the dunes as well.
HiPOD: Translucent Ice on Dunes
At the time of year we took the image, the whole scene was probably covered in carbon dioxide ice. Some of this ice is translucent, so you can see the dark dunes through it.

So much is coming home to roost in the US space program - NASA space suit development has been underfunded since the 1970s.
