I got to talk to students about harm reduction and clitoral pleasure today! I love my job.
An image of a pair of hands being held while a clipboard is on one person’s lap. The text to the side indicates participants are needed for a research study on miscarriage and workplace leave use among full time workers in the USA. People are eligible to participate if they have experienced a miscarriage at or before 20 weeks gestation, 18+ years of age, they eye working full time at the time of loss, living and working in the USA, can read and write in English, and have Internet access. Position requires completion of a screener which should take approximately 8-10 minutes and 15-20 for the full survey. Participants can either scan a QR code or go to go.uic.edu/leavestudy If people have questions or concerns about participating, they can contact Ashlee Van Schyndel (avansc6@uic.do) or Dr. Alisa Velonis (Velonis.edu). The study is approved under UIC’s IRB under STUDY2024-0976 v3.0 4/9/26
we’re back up and running! we’re doing a two-stage approach with a screener and then i will send a one-time link to participants.
if you have had a miscarriage since march 2024 and otherwise meet requirements as listed on the flyer, please consider participating in my survey (go.uic.edu/leavestudy)
New from me today: Illinois is the destination for nearly 1 in 4 people traveling to another state for abortion care.
That’s partly because of its geography, but Illinois also put in place new policies — along with millions of dollars — to welcome patients who aren’t their residents.
Man idk how to express how demoralizing it is to see people doing joke support for the Pope as the Catholic Church implements the most draconian trans healthcare ban anywhere in the US. It's a FULL ADULT TRANS HEALTHCARE BAN!!!THEY KEEP BUYING MORE HOSPITALS!!!!!!!
Moreover, ICE must be destroyed
It's wild that we've created a society where your only options are frequently exploitation or homelessness.
I’m realizing that my goal when teaching inequality is for my students to go, “Wait. What the fuck?”
Red Bull gives you wings but Nutella gets you to the f*****g moon
A jar of Nutella floating in NASA's Artemis Orion capsule went viral as the perfect accidental ad for the chocolate spread
The coffee giant won't extend these benefits to its unionized stores, as it continues engaging in some of the most egregious and rampant union busting in modern US history.

Instead of throwing out the money changers and telling people to give all their money away, Jesus would’ve been better off preaching a gospel of abundance.
I have very rarely cited papers or books that I have not fully read - usually in the methods where it's just the standard citation that everyone uses. And I have felt great fear that I would get caught
Have these people no shame?
The lit review isn't just a review of the literature -
ICE Gestapo and their dad DHS posted “Luke 23:46 On this solemn day, we reflect on the ultimate sacrifice our Savior made for all humanity. Trust in God’s plan.” 50501 No Kings Trump
Why are the Roman Soldiers posting a tribute to a refugee executed by the state?
Mississippi’s infant mortality rate increased to 9.7 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2024—the highest since 2013—the most recent data from MSDH shows. Since 2014, 3,527 babies have died before celebrating their first birthday, MSDH reported in 2025.

About a year ago I said that I probably wouldn't be able to get federal grants for my work for the foreseeable future and basically the NSF just said, "you're goddamed right you won't."
I still can't tell if this is an April Fool's joke or not . . .
Every time someone tells me something about childbirth it sounds more like a horror movie.
Are we surprised though?

My students are trying to recruit on campus for a survey about menstrual health knowledge and attitudes. So far they have definitively determined that yelling "Do you know Aunt Flo?" is not an effective strategy.
"A large Swedish study following women for up to 18 years found no evidence that the protection offered by the HPV vaccine fades. Those vaccinated before age 17 had around a 79% lower risk of invasive cervical cancer."

I lectured on maternal mortality in the US this morning, and it was an unpleasant reminder that we could absolutely solve this problem and have chosen not to.
it's a real mindfuck to see the leadership of a publication creating some of the most important journalism of a generation trying to screw the people doing the work
It was something from @ucheblackstockmd.bsky.social 's excellent book Legacy, which we read as part of our unit on health disparities and structural oppression in medicine. Thanks, Dr. Blackstock, for writing such an engaging and memorable text!
This morning during our discussion one of my students said "this reminds me of something we read in your class last semester," which may have been the peak professional moment of my life so far.
I taught with a migraine this afternoon, but the student who has steadfastly refused to participate in group activities actually contributed to his group today! So I feel like it was worth it even though I thought I was going to lose my lunch a couple of times.
There is no reason our health system has to be this complicated!
I ran into this a lot in my research with formerly incarcerated folks. They frequently had trouble identifying where they got their insurance or why they were eligible for the program, which sometimes meant they unexpectedly lost coverage and didn’t know how to re-enroll.
the largest state university in ohio quite literally banned sidewalk chalk while one of epstein's biggest supporters still has his name all over half the buildings on campus
