An image of a pair of hands being held while a clipboard is on one person’s lap. The text to the side indicates participants are needed for a research study on miscarriage and workplace leave use among full time workers in the USA. People are eligible to participate if they have experienced a miscarriage at or before 20 weeks gestation, 18+ years of age, they eye working full time at the time of loss, living and working in the USA, can read and write in English, and have Internet access.

Position requires completion of a screener which should take approximately 8-10 minutes and 15-20 for the full survey. Participants can either scan a QR code or go to go.uic.edu/leavestudy

If people have questions or concerns about participating, they can contact Ashlee Van Schyndel (avansc6@uic.do) or Dr. Alisa Velonis (Velonis.edu). The study is approved under UIC’s IRB under STUDY2024-0976 v3.0 4/9/26

Nearly 1 in 4 people seeking abortions out of state chose Illinois. Here’s why. • Stateline A recent report found that 1 in 4 people traveling to another state for an abortion end up in Illinois, where state officials have invested millions to create a strong financial and logistical support...

New from me today: Illinois is the destination for nearly 1 in 4 people traveling to another state for abortion care.

That’s partly because of its geography, but Illinois also put in place new policies — along with millions of dollars — to welcome patients who aren’t their residents.

Starbucks Expands Tipping and Adds Bonuses to Boost Barista Pay Coffee giant seeks to reward baristas for service, sales goals in chain turnaround.

The coffee giant won't extend these benefits to its unionized stores, as it continues engaging in some of the most egregious and rampant union busting in modern US history.

Instead of throwing out the money changers and telling people to give all their money away, Jesus would’ve been better off preaching a gospel of abundance.

Hallucinated citations are polluting the scientific literature. What can be done? Tens of thousands of publications from 2025 might include invalid references generated by AI, a Nature analysis suggests.

I have very rarely cited papers or books that I have not fully read - usually in the methods where it's just the standard citation that everyone uses. And I have felt great fear that I would get caught

Have these people no shame?

The lit review isn't just a review of the literature -

Babies Are More Likely to Die in Mississippi. Doctors Want to Study Why. The Fetal and Infant Mortality Review Panel would review fetal and infant deaths and “establish strategies to prevent infant deaths.”

Mississippi’s infant mortality rate increased to 9.7 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2024—the highest since 2013—the most recent data from MSDH shows. Since 2014, 3,527 babies have died before celebrating their first birthday, MSDH reported in 2025.

New research from the US and Sweden suggests the HPV vaccine is beating cervical cancer Two new studies confirm the HPV vaccine offers lasting protection against cervical cancer, but geography still determines who benefits.

"A large Swedish study following women for up to 18 years found no evidence that the protection offered by the HPV vaccine fades. Those vaccinated before age 17 had around a 79% lower risk of invasive cervical cancer."

It was something from @ucheblackstockmd.bsky.social 's excellent book Legacy, which we read as part of our unit on health disparities and structural oppression in medicine. Thanks, Dr. Blackstock, for writing such an engaging and memorable text!

I taught with a migraine this afternoon, but the student who has steadfastly refused to participate in group activities actually contributed to his group today! So I feel like it was worth it even though I thought I was going to lose my lunch a couple of times.

I ran into this a lot in my research with formerly incarcerated folks. They frequently had trouble identifying where they got their insurance or why they were eligible for the program, which sometimes meant they unexpectedly lost coverage and didn’t know how to re-enroll.
