New from me: This week marks the ninth Black Maternal Health Week began on Saturday. At Rewire News Group, we rounded up our reporting on the hurdles Black people face in getting adequate care during pregnancy and birth—and how Black women are taking action:

Communities without adequate access to maternal care are taking matters into their own hands. Timberly Washington, a medical student in the South who has also worked as a doula, wrote about why doulas are critical in making birth safer, especially for Black and Hispanic patients.
Hundreds of thousands of Black women lost or left their jobs in 2025, creating mass unemployment. Last November, Emma Akpan explained how that shaped their reproductive choices and restricted access to care:
🧵 The ninth annual Black Maternal Health Week began on Saturday, amplifying the perspectives of Black pregnant people and bringing awareness to high death rates Black women face during pregnancy and after birth. We cover these issues year-round. Here’s some of our reporting on Black maternal health:

For #TransDayofVisibility, @tmavuram.bsky.social rounded up our coverage documenting the Trump administration’s legal and political assaults on trans rights and autonomy. Read more:
New from me: This past year, the White House has systematically dismantled trans rights and autonomy, making the country less safe for trans people to live and thrive. At Rewire News Group, we reviewed our coverage of these political and legal assaults and their consequences.
Even amid the bad news, we found many stories of trans resilience and joy. Last August, we published a note by a young trans girl who felt loved and supported by her family and community. “We all get to decide who we want to be,” she wrote. “And I just want to be me.”
The next month, we published a letter from Daniel, a trans teen whose family had decided to leave the U.S. in hopes of finding a safer place to raise him. “Many anti-trans laws, like Tennessee’s gender-affirming care ban, target children and adolescents,” we wrote in our introduction to his letter.
🧵 This past year, the White House has systematically dismantled trans rights and autonomy, making the country less safe for trans people to live and thrive. We’ve followed these political and legal assaults, and this #TransDayofVisibility, we’re highlighting our coverage of their human consequences:
“Not being able to access your health-care appointments is such a stab in the side. … Being able to navigate any of these things in normal circumstances already has so much difficulty to it.”
NEW: In Minneapolis, @cameronoakes.bsky.social and Sam Donndelinger report, ICE’s Operation Metro Surge is preventing Latino patients from accessing HIV care. This story was produced in collaboration with @unclosetedmedia.bsky.social, an investigative LGBTQ-focused nonprofit news publication.
I like the flexibility of freelancing, but pitching yourself all the time, constantly, and taking advantage of everything that happens as a business opportunity is exhausting. Someone commission me so I can stop marketing myself full-time!

The research is clear: Abortion is safe across body size. But BMI limits at some abortion clinics are still pushing some patients into different care and higher costs. This story was originally reported by @19thnews.org, and republished through RNG‘s partnership with The 19th News Network.

For @rewirenewsgroup.com, @setharichardson.bsky.social reported on how ICE's presence in the Twin Cities has transformed kids' daily lives: "You can’t say to this student everything is going to be OK, because it’s not. Her mom did go to the detention center." rewirenewsgroup.com/2026/02/03/i...

ICE won’t tell anyone where 6-year-old Yuanxin is. He was separated from his dad at a mandatory check-in. The cruelty is unfathomable & makes us all unsafe. We must fight for freedom from fear & tyranny. We must abolish ICE & reunite all families separated by ICE.

The attack on public education is only accelerating under Trump 2.0. @tmavuram.bsky.social writes on two books with wildly competing visions for the path forward.
I wrote about the youth vote, and how young people could reshape American politics this decade, for @thenation.com
"Young voters are progressive, the conventional wisdom goes, if only they would go to the polls." Well, now they are, writes @tmavuram.bsky.social.

the republican party is a modern day Slave Power and the only way forward for this country is to sweep it into the ash heap of history
