Hi, I’m autistic and I’m the mayor of my city.
Oh, absolutely. But even if this was an accurate portrayal of autism (it’s not) his rhetoric and behavior still wouldn’t be okay.
I want to live in a world where someone’s right to exist isn’t conditional on their productive capacity, ability to write a poem, or go to the bathroom unassisted.
“Autism destroys families.”
No. No, it doesn’t. A lack of resources does that. Cutting programs and services does that. Spreading false information does that.
Four years ago I wrote my inaugural poem The Hill We Climb. Both when I wrote it and performed it, I did so while continuously reflecting on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and Coretta Scott King’s legacy.
