A top view of the bowl of antique coffee grinder. The inside of the bowl is painted white and the outside of the bowl and grinder is a red colour that has become mottled with age and use. There are coffee beans in the bottom the bowl waiting to be ground. Yum!

My Peugeot Freres coffee grinder was one of the more useful items I inherited after my mother died eleven years ago. It dates from sometime between the 1880s and 1930s and using it every morning is an incredibly satisfying start to the day.

I'm on the northern extreme of the Scottish Central Belt and this was as much as we had, now thawed, rained on and partially frozen, turning the pavement outside my house to a sheet of ice.

Where to start... A black and white photograph of a room furnished with Gothic and Renaissance furniture - there are several items of furniture in heavy, dark woods with a dining table and chairs on a rug in the centre of the room. There are two paintings on the wall, most likely painted by my grandfather. The scene looks like a room in a museum, heavy and formal. However there is a Christmas tree in the corner decorated with lights, baubles and lametta, and under the tree lies a contented-looking sleeping white cat.

Merry Christmas to all, and a photo from my family photo archive from the early 1950s. This was in the house in Rye, NY, where my mother spent several years of her childhood. The room is amazing but I think Angelo the cat has picked the only comfy spot. (See alt text for a more detailed description)

I woke up during the night last night feeling annoyed because I couldn't remember what animal laid potatoes. My partner assures me that the animal that lays potatoes is the haggis, and whether a potato becomes a baby haggis or stays as a potato depends on whether it was fertilised or not.

Mine arrived yesterday. It's lovely, although I slightly prefer the format of the 2025 calendar because I think the portrait orientation photos work better with it rather than being put into landscape pages with loads of space each side as in the 2026 calendar. But that might be just me.

I'm having the same problem, also in the UK.

Not totally - I believe Orkney Library has a mobile library called Booky McBookface.

One of my favorite things is getting to tell friends who are new to NYC that the subway "stand clear of the closing doors please" voice is a trans woman named Bernie Wagenblast and she's amazing.

Ozymandias is quite plausibly a British Shorthair; between WWI and WWII cat breeding became unfashionable so other breeds were bred in to maintain the gene pool. With BSH it was Persian, so if you have two BSH parents with Persian longhair genes you occasionally get a longhaired BSH kitten.

He looks absolutely adorable, also maybe a little starstruck on hearing that World Famous Dog #sophiefromromania lives nearby.

A stripy cat looking over the top of a stone wall, with the stone wall of an old house in the background. Due to the dimming winter light and the colours of the stone, cat and walls are similar colours of grey-brown.

This well-camouflaged beauty appeared on my walk today. They sniffed my fingers, made a flehmen face and backed off a little (presumably detected my own cats). Obviously cautious so I will try again for pets if I see them again. @thecatreviewer.bsky.social

A black and white photo showing three people standing up (two women and a man). My grandmother is on the left, wearing a spotted dress. The woman in the centre is wearing a dark coloured (black?) dress or coat and a brimmed hat. She is looking down and holding (or trying to control?) two kittens - one is possibly grey and white, the other black with a dot of white on its nose. The man on the right of the photo is wearing a suit, but he's clearly not important as only half of him is in the photo.

Another in an occasional series from my family photo archive. Initially I only saw one kitten, then realised there are two. My grandmother is on the left, but I don't know who the other people are. Date? 1920s I'd estimate.

Or not. The Feminist Art of Walking, which appears in every ad for this offer, does not appear to be included and is full price.

Given up on the concept of being "well-rounded". I'm more like a hexagon, and depending on what side I happen to accidently roll I get work, family, exercise, hobbies or a tidy house. None can co-exist.

My mother chose my name after her favourite author (Laura Ingalls Wilder) and because it was "unusual." Of course it turned out to be almost peak "Laura" year and there were four of us my high school year in my not massive high school.

A sight that pleased me greatly this weekend was a father (I assume) teaching his daughter (I assume), maybe around 8-10 years old and wearing a hat with a strawberry print, how to climb trees. Not something you see often in this safety-conscious era, especially not on a riverbank.

The Tesco (not a big Tesco, I think it's technically a Tesco Metro) in my small Scottish town has already put displays of Christmas tubs of chocolate out on display. My partner was horrified.

I think I might have peaked too early by posting one of the best cat photos in my collection on Saturday. More to come and this one is more typical. Meet Samson, photo taken in Rye, NY in 1953.

A black and white photo of a girl with bobbed, wavy hair (my mother) holding a black and white cat. The girl is wearing a plaid top or dress, and the cat looks displeased at being held and is trying to get away.

I'm a fan of @catsofyore.bsky.social and have family cat photos, so I might share a few. Many of them were taken by my grandmother, Elisabeth Phillips (nee Fritze) who was a professional photographer before she married in 1933. This is my mother, aged 12, in 1952 with Sylvester (taken in Rye, NY).

I had a ZX81. Well, my dad did until I showed an interest in programming, aged 8, then he never had a chance to use it. I was so upset when it broke a few years later.

It's a Monday; whilst I came to terms with the fact I am completely useless on Mondays a long time ago, this is pretty much it every week.

This reminds me of a recent visit to my partner's parents. His mother usually collects us from the railway station but shortly before arrival we received a message (via WhatsApp thankfully, not postcard): "your father will pick you up, the number plate has fallen off my car."
