I absolutely know liberals who think like that also. I once had a republican tell me "We all want the same things in the end, we just believe in different paths on how to get there". While I don't think thats necessarily true. I do believe the majority of America fits under this.

While agree that the current conservatism is not the real values of the right, I also think its nonsensical to think liberals don't understand this. A lot of us do understand that the right wants limited government. We just don't agree. I believe regulations help prevent a lot of crime and harm.
