When I was a student, all the graduands went to a room ahead of the ceremony and had our names called. This was both roll call and an opportunity to correct pronunciation (which was explained to us). Super easy.

A bit contextual really. In some cases, a former spouse might still have legal rights re your property, kids, income etc, and an institution might need to know that. In others it might explain name changes. Often it’s just custom and not needed.
Or in other words the conversation is less a news outlet than a marketing firm.
These are the country level editors. Each country has its own website and own team.
Most of their funding comes from unis who are paying them to publish their staff’s research (you generally have to be an affiliate of one of their funders to publish with them). This would just mean the uni is paying their staff to publish twice.
Also the conversation is funded by universities and grants. That ‘profit’ just means their giving was higher than needed and can be reduced the following year. It is also why not everyone can publish with them - you usually need to be an affiliate of one of their funders.

I imagine they looked at the controversy around Port Darwin in Australia and wondered if it would raise similar issues.
They needed to cite the reading in various assessments and the only way they could that (in theory at least) was to use the catalogue to do it. In some courses I also had ‘search’ assignments where they had to come up with a list of relevant readings from their own search.
I refused to use the reading list and made using a library catalogue a research learning outcome.

Just outstanding.
Usually was a research masters. Not uncommon in the UK either. The uptake of the PhD at scale in unis was starting to be pushed then but really became essential in the 90s.
