Screenshot of an email from Violet to a Gender Justice League employee: My regular donation to Gender Justice League is entirely because of spite! Back in 2020, Library Journal named Seattle Public Library as their 2020 Library of the Year, a pretty prestigious thing in librarianship. There were many of us in the profession who were mad about this choice, because in 2019, Seattle Public Library hosted WOLF, a TERF organization. (Seattle Public Library said they were required to do that because of their open meeting room policies, but 1. other libraries chose not to host WOLF and they didn't get sued, 2. SPL could have changed their meeting room policies but chose not to, and 3. SPL didn't apologize or take actions to support their trans workers or patrons—to this day, they remain unapologetically, weirdly, staunchly proud that they're "intellectual freedom fighters," without consideration about the bigots who that emboldens.) Library Journal's write-up about Seattle Public Library didn't mention that SPL had figuratively thrown their trans workers under the bus. So I started a petition to get that award revoked (1,700 people signed the petition!), and asking the $10,000 award to SPL be given instead to GJL. Library Journal did not revoke the award, but they did apologize for not initially discussing it and for dismissing the complaints. Plus, at that time, the sponsor of the award gave a separate $10,000 award to GJL. For the last few years, Library Journal has asked me to present (on an unrelated topic) at one of their webinars. Every time I present for them, I donate my $600 honorarium to GJL and talk about their bad decision in 2020 during my webinar. (My spouse asked a few days ago, "haven't you made your point already?" and I was like "I GUESS NOT!!!") That's the story. Also my 13-year-old nephew is trans and I love him dearly, and want a better world for him. Grateful for the important work you're doing and happy to help when I can. Thanks, Violet
Got an email from Gender Justice League thanking me for my regular donations over the last five years, and asking about my motivation. I got to tell them all about how my donation is entirely motivated by spite.
Maybe some of you will remember the Library of the Year 2020 debacle?? 📚
