Ah that’s amazing, thanks for sharing Martin!
Wild side gig for that cattle inspector too
Going through digitised NARA files and learned the OSS (forerunner to the CIA) believed there was a “Nazi spy center” operating in Tralee in 1942. Anyone know of any corroborating sources/reading on this?
This was a disastrous form of leftist anti-establishment politics, one that failed to recognise that in times of grave crisis the enemy of my enemy is often no friend at all.
In Germany in 1931, a referendum campaign was launched by a revanchist far-right organisation that in essence delegitimised the Weimar Republic. It was backed by the German Communists because it took aim at their nemeses the Social Democrats.
I spend my work hours in the documentary evidence of the left as it faced the challenge of the far right in the 1930s. One moment I have thought a lot about over the past week (bear with me) is the 1931 Prussian Landtag referendum.
This is excellent and helped me clarify what I have been grasping towards as I've tried to make sense of the last week in Ireland and the left's response.
“Immigrants could be found in every corner of the Irish Free State at that time.”
Excited for this release - and grateful it’s not paywalled, unlike its UK counterpart

For anyone who has read @mauricejcasey.com's "Hotel Lux", this is a wonderful spin-off of an anti-Nazi resistance network and the family at its heart, told through a newspaper crafted by two young girls.

A children's birthday message with the same anti-Nazi greeting
It's the kind of defacement that could be performed quickly: picture a resister, constantly watching over their shoulder, achieving this in a couple of motions. Yet its message was unmistakable.
So simple a child could do it. In at least one case I've found, children did.
The ISK was instructing sympathisers how to simply and quickly transform Nazi iconography into a condemnation of the regime.
Using four lines - one up, one across, one diagonal, one down - the Swastikas placed everywhere could be transformed into a warning: Nazis, your day is coming.
The flyer declares (roughly translated): with heart and hand we will put the Nazi shame on every wall.
"Und zwar so" - Just like this:
Anti nazi slogan and a Swastika hanging from a gallows in a simple line drawing
Graphic Design for Antifascists:
In 1936, the Gestapo encountered this flyer smuggled into Germany by the ISK, an anti-Nazi network.
The Gestapo noted that the image was a calling card of this underground group.
Behind it lay some clever design thinking 🧵 1/

Announcement of international socialist women's meeting in Copenhagen in 1910.
At the International Socialist Women's congress at Copenhagen in 1910, it was decided to institute an International Women's Day, much in the spirit of the International Workers' Day. What is little known is that the Indian revolutionary Bhikhaiji Rustom Cama was present at the meeting in Copenhagen.
Thanks to Áine Toner of the @belfasttelegraph.co.uk for speaking with me about the Alpenpost!
