I’m happy that I don’t do litigation anymore and honestly these things are part of the reason. But the system - it doesn’t matter which one, criminal, immigration, healthcare, whatever - is still shit and I hate it here

And oftentimes prepping for court means retraumatizing your clients, making them live through their worst moments again and again. Only for it to come to nothing.

How many times have I been completely ready and prepared for trial, only for it to not go forward? Sure for me it is annoying but for the client, it is exhausting. To think you are finally going to have your moment, finally going to have a decision, only for it to get dragged out again.

And to see how absolutely devastated the family was by something so simple as moving the trial date. To us lawyers, things like that are routine. But to them, it was devastating. And I think it is good to be reminded about things that seem small to us are huge to our clients and their lives.

There was a part where the lawyer was basically saying to go along with whatever the state wanted because that’s the best way to get your child back. And I thought about how many times I essentially told my clients the same thing. “Yeah it sucks and it’s wrong but this is how it works.”

As a lawyer, it is especially upsetting to watch instances like this where the system fails so miserably and so heartbreakingly because I feel complicit.

Just finished the “Take Care of Maya” documentary on Netflix and I am once again so deeply saddened and angry to my core at the way the legal system functions

I guess since we’re all new here I can introduce myself. I’m an attorney who used to practice immigration law but got burnt out so now I do doc review. Raised and live in MN but lived in Mass for 8 years and East Lansing for undergrad. Married to a Brazilian. I read a lot and binge TV a lot.
