Here's my LLB explainer thread, re-created for Bluesky
(I wrote a whole article about Letter Banks, which I'll be posting on a real blog soon...)
You will. Along with professionals, talk to friends and family members who are good listeners.
😬😜😴
Right! I know it's also an anagram clue (a special kind), and I'm sure it wasn't written with the intent of being a letter bank clue, but nonetheless... it's a letter bank clue!
There are other variants of anagram clues that involve repetition, but in a letter bank cryptic clue:
The clue's FODDER is the "bank" and the ANSWER uses only those letters, one or more times each
OR
The ANSWER is the "bank" and the clue's FODDER uses only those letters, one or more times each
Are youth increasingly mobile? Be jealous! (3,4,5,3)
Check out #LowdownLetterBank for some of my letter bank clues, and here's a fun LB clue from one of my published cryptics
A letter bank is wordplay where a word with no repeated letters (like LENS) is the "bank" to make a longer word/phrase (like SENSELESS)
Letter bank cryptic clues (mainly seen in US/Canada) are distinct from anagram clues but involve anagramming with repetition

Was anyone else aware that yesterday's Minute Cryptic (by bixarrio) is a #letterbank clue?
Nice to see so many people getting the concept from this very accessible example, even if they've never heard of letter banks!

Go ahead, waste your brainpower on my clue-of-the-day on Cryptick! ✅
Follow the link to solve it on Cryptick, where you can get a hint or reveal letters (not cheating - it forms more neural connections!)
After solving, "like" this post and the clue post below as proof of brainpower well wasted! 🤯
Shame on us, wasting half our brainpower on cryptic crosswords, when we could be sacrificing enjoyment and balance to double our productivity!
Thanks for another Canadian clue! For some up-to-the-minute Canadian music, how about this microtonal math-rock from Quebec?

Ben makes excellent themed cryptics and this one’s a literary gem 📖

Terrific, theme-packed puzzle! 👏
Nice one!
It’s ok, the cryptic wasn’t part of the tournament!

You're verging on a Letter Bank clue here! (but LB clues need at least 3 letters repeated, by convention)
"Deceitful fraud" is a much better example than "shout out"
I agree that "stolen" isn't a good anagrind and neither is "embezzled". Why not use a better one like "manipulated" or "redistributed"? (to make the clue fairer, especially since the def and anagram are difficult)
Well done! Your clue was my favourite and I gave it 4 points when voting. I considered it a better version of my clue, which uses the same wordplay.
Your anagrind and cryptic grammar were fine, IMO. There are always different tastes and views along the Ximenean/Libertarian spectrum.
Yeah, I guess so. I can complete one, but pretty slowly. Hopefully I can do the first few puzzles tomorrow within the time limit, but I doubt I'll be able to finish the more difficult ones on the second day.
One of the warm-up puzzles tonight was a cryptic. I solved it online in 19 mins but forgot to press Submit 🤦♂️
The top few in-person solvers completed it in under 10 mins!
Yes, I'm one of a few hundred "virtual" participants. We'll solve the same crosswords as in-person, but on computer instead of paper. We're in a separate category for results, not mixed with the in-person solvers.
It's not about being "good enough" - I'm just doing it for the fun and experience!
Excited to be part of #ACPT for the first time!
I'm participating virtually, so I won't get to meet everyone in word nerd heaven at the event but I'll solve the puzzles and catch the speakers and activities 😀
Taking a break from cryptics this weekend as I immerse myself in "normal" crosswords!
Argh, I wrote a very similar clue for a puzzle that's going through editing soon. It's for the same word, with identical wordplay but different definition. I'm guessing I'll be able to leave it as is, though.
Solved it and enjoyed those two clues! (and others)
