Roadsides 15 :: Cryosphere is out

This collection conceptualizes the changing cryosphere as infrastructure. It foregrounds snow and ice as more-than-physical assemblages utilized and co-created by humans and non-human worlds.

NASA's Blue Marble picture of Earth, from 1972

It's only worth going back to the Moon if it makes us look properly again at Earth, and appreciate how beautiful, precious and fragile what we have here is. The most famous images from Apollo aren't about the Moon - they're pictures of Earth. We need to stop taking our home for granted.

Flyer promoting a seminar talk by Dr. Daniela Marini on March 11 at 12pm MST. The talk is titled "Seeds of Dissent" and includes the following description: "This presentation explores how communities in Argentina organize to resist the impacts of herbicide-resistant soy monoculture. Rural and urban communities organize against pesticide exposure, establishing environmental protection zones around urban centers and advancing legal and scientific precedents against fumigations.
Embracing the lens of body-territory, this movement is working to eliminate gender-based violence in the homes and fields where food producers live and work. In this view, land is inseparable from embodied life-not a commodity, but a living relationship-signaling a profound epistemic shift that challenges the dominant agricultural system at its core."

Reality: Mars sucks. No one can live there.

Also reality: the Moon sucks. We can’t live there either.

More reality: Earth is the only place we can thrive.

Cover art by Thais Trindade. The title "NACLA REPORT ON THE AMERICAS" is listed on top. The illustration is like a board game, where communities stand in the way of capitalist and extractivist powers going through the board with tractors and other machinery, commodifying forests, removing people, even as they place wind turbines and other symbols of "sustainable development". The arrow points to the endgame: Green capitalism in the americas.

The latest issue of the NACLA Report was co-edited by Breno Bringel and myself. NACLA is deeply committed to socio-environmental justice in the Americas, so we wanted this issue to provide insights into the state of ecological imperialism in the region, including its green capitalist facades.

the crisis in which the University of Chicago is now engulfed -- one entirely of its own making, and which has led to the (hopefully temporary) suspension of admissions into numerous PhD programs in the humanities -- represents I think a seismic event in the history of American higher education

Remember: There is nothing natural or inevitable about extreme inequality; it’s the result of an economic system that values wealth and power over human dignity and justice.

It doesn't have to be this way.
