Data centres uses 32% of Ireland's total electricity supply but pay almost less than half of the residential rate. So we're effectively subsidizing tech giants during a cost of living & energy crisis. Meanwhile this Govt continues to cheerlead their expansion & continue to fail in their obligations.
Not once in the 80s, 90s or 00s do I recall a politician urging the public to embrace email, mobile phones, texting, two factor authentication, online banking, air fryers, or to replace all their cassette collection with a CD collection.

Half a billion euro for 10c off each litre of petrol and diesel for drivers and all the rest on private business. No grants to make evs or hybrid cars affordable for people, no increase in grants for home insulation to save on heating oil, no reduction in the price of home heating oil.
One of the ways news media often fail us is by giving us the microscopic rather than the telescopic view. Everything I mention in this essay is well-documented, but the dots are mostly not connected to make visible this death by a thousand cuts our country is undergoing.
I just don't understand how we've managed to get ourselves into a place where having a home - something I would have as a child seen as a baseline - is felt as an enormous position of privilege, something you spend half your life working for and still can only achieve with help or luck.
