_The History of the Siege of Lisbon_ by Jose Saramago is fiction but you will learn more about the historical process than from a 400-level HIST course. It also happens to be one of the most beautifully written books I've ever read.

I read the book when I was about 17 and it scared the daylights out of me.
LOL Also gave me a newfound appreciation for 🇨🇦, where we all have basements.

We're never going to make a Heritage Minute about this fiasco. I only read the conclusion but do you think there are parallels to be drawn between 🇨🇦 Airborne in Somalia and 🇦🇺 Delta Force in Afghanistan?

Do you see a difference between strategic and precision bombing?

1/2 My point is that had the 🇨🇦s not seen the 🇩🇿s running (and dying) from the gas, they'd have had no time to react. Hard to yell , "Piss in your hankies" when your lungs are full of gas. The Algerian sacrifice enabled the 🇨🇦 stand. Had the 🇨🇦 been in the 1st line, I doubt they'd have fared as well.

This may have been the first use of a poison gas but there were French troops in front of the Canadians, specifically the 1st Tirailleurs and the 2nd Zouaves from Algeria. Had they not taken the brunt, the CDNs wouldn't have known how to react.
