How does management affect forest recovery after disturbances? 🪵🌱🌳@kirstenkrueger.bsky.social developed a cool approach combining remotely sensed canopy heights with a theoretical growth model to compare recovery across different forest management types doi.org/10.1016/j.fo...

In 2023, after a wave of severe forest disturbance across Central Europe, we made a big group effort of surveying post-disturbance regeneration. It involved a lot of scrambling through brambles, but also a lot of fun (and reassuring to see a lot of regeneration). Happy to see the results published!

New paper - and final PhD chapter of @lisa-mandl.bsky.social - published in Agricultural and Forest Meteorology. Using Landsat recovery and meteorological data, we show that thermal limitations constrain post-disturbance recovery success across forests of the European Alps: doi.org/10.1016/j.ag...

Can “Closer-to-Nature” Forest Management Sustain Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in an Uncertain Future? Lessons from Central Europe - Current Forestry Reports Purpose of Review Forests produce timber, mitigate climate change and provide important habitats; yet their capacity to provide these services under rapid global change is uncertain. “Closer-to-nature...

"Closer-to-nature" forest management has been proposed as a way to reconcile biodiversity and ecosystem services, especially under a changing climate. But can it work? And how strong is the evidence?
In this paper, we synthesized knowledge from Central Europe:

What is our role as ecologists in times of biodiversity crisis? We reflected on this with participants of the Neretva Science Week in 2023, and the results are now published: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Nice work from @kirstenkrueger.bsky.social showing that contrary to some beliefs, setting forests aside (i.e. not managing them) does not increase disturbances - unmanaged forests are actually less disturbed 🌲
