Figure from the second article by Armel Ménant and collaborators. It shows lithospheric-scale cross-sections that illustrate the temporal evolution of the Hellenic subduction zone since the late Eocene. Four stages are shown, at 35-40 Ma, 25 Ma, 15 Ma, present. They illustrate the successive burial, basal-accretion and exhumation stages of the high pressure low temperature units that constitute the paleo accretionary complex of western Crete

Interesting story 👇

www.nature.com/articles/d41...

A researcher posted two preprints about a fabricated disease, containing numerous red flags indicating it was fake. #LLMs #AI swallowed this and then regurgitated it in their responses.

Sorry, but here the problem is not one that could be fixed by correcting the cited references. It's entirely fabricated references that resemble true ones.

After 2 pauses of a few days (25-28 March - 2-8 April) the eruption at Piton de la Fournaise #volcano resumed on 8 April. Today a new eruptive site opened higher above the main cone in an already fissured zone. ⚒️

Received a review request for a journal I wasn't aware of. Manuscript title and abstract were fanciful.

An opportunity to "discover" 😆 that Springer Nature copied MDPI with a bunch of (semi)predatory journals named "discover something".

Be sure not to review or publish in these journals. ⚒️ 🧪

Fully agree. "Hallucination" is used by AI people as an excuse to minimise the issue which goes far beyond the academic context.
Any AI output should be considered as potentially fake / fabricated. This is inherent to their statistical nature. Not doing the work to check is indeed a sort of fraud.

Thank you all for your many responses. Result is 100% reject*. Plus some recommendation to alert the "PI" or "supervisor" etc…
But what if the first author IS the senior scientist** ?

*in fact my question was mostly rhetorical, as I knew the answer 😉
**who is a good scientist btw 😕

Interesting reading in @nature.com: Hallucinated citations are polluting the scientific literature. What can be done?

www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Particularly relevant to me right now 👇 as I received a request to review a #manuscript that contains fake citations, likely #AI hallucinated. ⚒️ 🧪

2 weeks ago 13 3 3 3

I've been asked to review a manuscript in which there are several fake references, most likely hallucinated by AI.

This means that the authors haven't read, even browsed, the papers they cite.

What should I do ? Reject ?
