Packet of Indomie Mi Goreng 3 minute noodles

Packet contents of Indomie noodles in not-sunmer noodle brick, silver foil sachet of sauce and chilli powder, and crucially, the seasoning oil and kecap manis sachet is hard and the contents solid and off white in the oil side.

In the summer, the same noodle package contents are different. The seasoning oil is liquid and no longer off white.

Anyone else have a weird way to mark the passing of seasons?

It's summer when seasoning oil is liquid.

Not summer when it is solid!

How many birds in the bush is this worth? It is a linear or exponential thing?

Now *that's* a cost of living crisis.

I thought 8+ hours was a lot.

I think they were studying Arabian oryxes on that trip.

Very panicked expression on his face. Not seen for some time, but still occasionally heard echoing over the dunes, as his gastrointestinal tract did protest most verily.

My favourite lunch gross anecdote was of an obnoxious researcher who pissed everyone off, so the locals dared him to drink a big bowl of camel milk. The story states that camel milk is a powerful laxative, so moments later, the dude is running for his dignity over the crest of the nearest dune.

I am aware this is not particularly effective as a treatment, and perhaps they were too, but in a remote jungle, hospitals are far away...

I seem to recall there having been work to be able to do at least some studies on formalised specimens in the intervening decades.

I think my favourite gross biology dinner anecdote was a group of Japanese ichthyologists doing a survey somewhere tropical. Professor gets bitten on the posterior by some venomous snake, so the grad student is literally required to kiss ass.

My takeaway worry was not being able to ask the question of preserved holotypes.

Fish people are also much more used to being able to (mostly) just look at a thing and go "yep, that's an x", whereas insect people are like "not a clue, until you squash it's genitals under a microscope".

Speaking of letters, the "moments away from a brawl" vibes at a fish conference in the early 2000s around emerging uses of DNA in taxonomy and systematics were palpable in one session.

And that's in fish, where there are way fewer tiny little guys (although there are a ton of little silver jobs, admittedly), and the taxonomy is (arguably) way further along than insects.

I was stunned by that old video that did the rounds a few years back of the guy hugging a tree and going "You can tell it's an aspen, because of how it is".

Which is totally valid... for that guy.

I'm still scarred by descriptions like "moderately elongated". If I've only ever seen one example of this type of thing, what is long, short or somewhere in the middle? Baseline that sort of thing to something else you can measure and say how many times or fractions the other character is to that.

There is always drama in taxonomy and systematics. A lot of it comes down to vibes*, and those are different to everyone. :D

*Yes, there are numbers (and sometimes letters these days) involved, but *how* different is /different/? What's similar enough to these but not those?

I've always found the ones that come with APC racks great for getting them in. Small, simple and lightweight.

I have only ever worked in one place that had a reference library. Loved it.

I saw someone doing this in public woods near us and then read it takes 110l of sap to make 1l of syrup. Unreal.

Sam's song.

You and me
We used to be together
Everyday together
Always.
I really feel
That I'm losing
My best friend
Can't believe this could be
The end

Lembas, I know what you're eating...
So please stop complaining
Don't tell me cause it hurts
