I guess it boils down toactual discourse vs filler. High quality content vs low effort content.

Everyone has access to video editing software and can rip a series online, so in a way I can understand why Youtube is flooded with this kind of low effort content.

It’s just a bummer to see.

This isn’t to say I’m against video essays as a whole, I think Contrapoints does them well. It’s research presented with applicable visuals — not a rehashing of content for likes and subs. She also designs sets and backdrops which add to the video aesthetically.

Part of it is because I’m staunchly against gen ai, as an illustrator all I see is unsanctioned creative theft.

The other part is this isn’t any different from reposters who recut short form with an artificial voice over (usually stolen from reddit).

My youtube recommendations have been flooded with a very specific style of video essay where all of the visuals have been ripped from a single show/series.

I don’t like it.
