“We Belong to Each Other Now”: Lessons from Minneapolis “This extreme closeness, togetherness and intimacy — you cannot infiltrate your way into a space where you'll understand that," says May, a rapid responder in Minneapolis.

After months of relentless rapid response in Minneapolis, members of Defend the 612 had a moment to breathe and reflect on the lessons they’ve learned, the grief they carry, and the citywide fellowship they hope will endure. The crisis is not over, and I’m grateful they made time to speak with me.

Great to hear.

I would also be interested to know if the King County Executive or Council is interested in pursuing this, given the executive orders that came down this week. It seems helpful to cover a larger area all at once, but I don’t know whether that’s possible.

Do you know if there is a similar effort happening in King County, particularly with the Tukwila location having been identified?

Despite wide public support for the Millionaire's Tax, 30k people have signed CON on this legislation getting its first hearing this Friday, outnumbering those in the PRO column four to one. It's really easy to sign PRO - do it now!

Alex Pretti from his early days working at the VA

Alex from our time working together, while he was in nursing school. Later, he moved to ICU, working as a nurse to support critically ill Veterans. He had such a great attitude. We’d chat between patients about trying to get in a mountain bike ride together. Will never happen now

Thanks for your reporting on this. Am I reading this incorrectly somehow, or did you say the interline option would close Line 1 for three years?? That feels like a non-starter.

Walmart and Amazon also receive the largest amount of SNAP dollars in grocery sales, so they benefit twice over for those inadequate wages.

Intrigued to know how $250k would be used for such a project. If you split that among 60 families, it’s over $4k, and I can’t help but think about how vital that money would have been in helping any number of the families in your book when they were at the same point.

Well if this isn’t just the mantra of the moment.

And not just housing! Unaffordable commercial leases contribute to the same high operational costs >> high prices. Do you have any specific policy plans that address that too?

This was such a great story, some of the best coverage I read today. So glad to learn about what’s happening in Yakima, and grateful for all the voices you represented in the piece.

“Recent research suggests that the true number of people experiencing homelessness — factoring in those living in cars or motel rooms, or doubled up with others — is at least six times as high as official counts.”

Also not just homelessness of course, housing unaffordability up the income ladder, etc. Indicators for small businesses likewise not great along similar considerations like increased operating costs (again, including rent) greater than revenue increases.

I don’t think all alternative measures bear that out, and a serious reckoning with how we measure economic health is warranted. Money didn’t go as far, and we continue to face record food insecurity and homelessness. I thought this analysis captured it well. www.stephensemler.com/p/how-the-mo...
