Some lunatic just called my phone (strike 1) and left a "voice mail" (strike 2) in which he failed to fully state his business, suggesting I must call him back to get the whole story. Are you out of your damn mind. Furthermore it is the sabbath

This iron age man buried in Sussex was so proud of his awesome helmet that he developed an archaeologically detectable neck injury from wearing it so often.

Here’s an except appropriate for Lent: an introduction to the story of Adam and Eve that Sahagún chose as a text for Septuagesima Sunday.

The rhetorical mode here is unmistakably native, with its piling up of synonyms and elaborate pluvial imagery — but it’s also unmistakably a Catholic text.

De Lagny died on 11 April 1734. While he was dying, someone asked him: "What is the square of 12?" and he answered immediately: "144."

Two cats resting on a bed. The grey tabby cat in the back is leaning against a soft grey pillow. The black cat in the front is tangled in a small blanket. A bookcase can be glimpsed in the back, proving that these aren't just beautiful but also well educated cats. The key point here, though, is that the cats are not trying to eat each other which is a huge paw forward.

It's not exactly peace in our time but it does count as a truce in our early afternoon.

Handing Out Free Tickets, Mamdani Says Theater Should Not Be ‘a Luxury’

“When I speak about making our city more affordable, my vision is not limited to the homes that we live in or the child care that we’re making universal — it’s also a vision where we make it possible for working people to afford lives of joy, of art, of rest, of expression.”

Year of the Red Fire Horse. I’m reminded of a poem by Jeongrye Choi about a legendary warrior who cuts off the head of the horse that always carried him to his lover’s house, believing this act will allow him to fulfill his destiny. The poem, however, takes a different view.

As 2026 approaches a happy new year's toast to you all with this marvellous 4th century Roman cage-cup, which bears an inscription, a toast that reads:

BIBE MULTIS ANNIS - Drink for many years!

Cheers and here's to a far better year in 2026! 🥂

Urbana, Ill., Daily Courier

Dec. 28, 1925: Alfred Burgin sleeps in his Chicago pet store to better protect his beloved canaries during a cold wave. But in the night, the flame goes out in his stove, and the gas kills him and all 200 birds in their cages.

I always find these memorials at Postman’s Park unbearably moving. They make my eyes water every time. It’s a lovely idea, to commemorate ordinary people who do extraordinary things.

And Tiny Tim, who did NOT die, roams the vitrified surface of the Earth under a red Sun that no longer sets. He reckons time in mountain ranges now, not Christmases.

“God Bless Us,” he observes. “Almost Every One.”

Color digital photo of a Victorian Christmas card, c. 1880, featuring a grey mouse riding a red lobster, holding one of the lobster's pairs of antennae as reins in its left hand, and a white piece of paper in its right hand with the French words "Paix, Joie, Santé, Bonheur" ("Peace, Joy, Health, Happiness") written in black ink. (There are many examples of Christmas cards from this era featuring strange animal imagery, often comical and/or macabre...honestly this isn't even the weirdest one out there LOL)

#MerryChristmas to those who celebrate...here's a c. 1880 Christmas card with a mouse riding a lobster, holding a note that reads "Paix, Joie, Santé, Bonheur" ("Peace, Joy, Health, Happiness"). Victorian era Christmas cards were weird. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
