The incredibly talented @straatemans.bsky.social has worked his magic on History of the Netherlands episode 16, the Fishy Tale of Willem Beukelszoon. As a herring, I must say he has perfectly captured my feelings about the process of gibbing. Now excuse me while I migrate and feast on zooplankton.
Is that… a new episode being recorded?!
What a great story Derek! Thanks so much for sharing. I love the tattoo. You're absolutely right that's not the cliche Amsterdam one, but rather something so fascinating, unique and historical. Good for you!!
This is awesome!
They had a symposium about my historical tattoo and I made it to local tv! I never knew that's what I sound like in Dutch...

New episode! The first of a two-parter involving the deaths of Handsome Phils. We discuss the marriage between Margaret of Austria and Philibert the Handsome, Duke of Savoy. Margaret took the reigns in Savoy until Phil unexpectedly died...

New cover for History of the Netherlands podcast: “Kill Phil – Volume 1” (Tarantino tribute, obviously 😏) Real Phil (Philibert II of Savoy) died quietly—not revenge-movie style. Less dramatic, better for him! So focused on mourning bride Margaret of Austria: furious her dad & brother tried marrying her off again after Phil passed. She'd had enough—refused like the queen she was 💪 #History #Netherlands #Habsburg #Podcast #MargaretOfAustria #Tarantino #KillBill #Art #Comic

Episode 57 is written, episode 58 is planned out. The aim is to get a new episode of the chronology out each month for the rest of the year. Saying it publicly to try and keep myself accountable! Thanks to everybody who listens to History of the Netherlands, we love you dearly. Cheers.
New episode! Maximilian tries (and fails) to impose his will in Tuscany, before convincing Julich and Cleves to help attack Guelders (but failing to convince his own son to do so). Also, Charles of Egmont almost dies in the siege of Huissen.

New episode! We interviewed the daughter and nieces of Rosalie Nathans, a Holocaust survivor from Amsterdam, about her life and about their journey to get memorial plaques installed on the street in front of their family's former home this year.

We have completely finished a new interview episode which will be released this week and I am just putting the finish touches on the script for Episode 56 of History of the Netherlands. End of year productivity!
Not only can he do all that, but he's also a brilliant illustrator!!
A new @historyofnl.bsky.social art.
In the 15th century, while most of Europe was tightening the grip of feudal lords, the Frisians were out here living their best “no lord but the Emperor” life. ✊ …and how it ended.
A follow-up to Episode 15 👀

New episode! We delve into Frisian Law and Frisian Freedom and how they developed in the 15th century. We then look at how conditions changed until in 1498 Frisian Freedom was stamped out by the very Emperor who was supposed to uphold it.
Pumped for the Ashes. Can't wait to see two Australians with indigenous heritage playing in Baggy Greens tomorrow. Should be better than 21-22, hopefully a good contest between the two sides. I think Australia will win 3-1, wash out in Sydney. I'm going to day 2 of the Boxing Day test, pumped!

Editing the next episode while admiring this plexiglass reproduction of Jan Steen’s The Life of Man which someone had chucked out on the street. People throw away the best stuff here in Amsterdam. It now hangs on our studio wall!
And by 95% I mean 100%.
We hope you enjoyed the recent interview! We have written 95% of the script for Episode 55. We've also already planned out Episodes 56 and 57, plus already recorded one of two interviews which will be in our next interview show. We know we're slow but there should be 4 more episodes this year! 🤞🤞🤞
New interview! We speak with Andrea-Vicky Amankwaa-Birago about her research into Kwasi Boachi, a 19th century Ashanti prince who was educated in the Netherlands, plus what she, personally, is out to achieve working as a historian in today’s world. www.republicofamsterdamradio.com/episodes/202...
Drawing of spanish soldiers in the rain
The Spaniards are coming! Hopefully a new project 🤞🏻 but at least it is good practice for the 500 episodes about the 80 years war with @historyofnl.bsky.social 😅 #80jarigeoorlog #1573 #tachtigjarigeoorlog #80yearswar #8oktober #alkmaarontzet #vierdevictorie #alkmaar #alkmaarsontzet
Awesome hopefully see you next time. We have two interviews we are working on and two new regular eps we are working on too.
Working on it!
New episode! We speak with @loekzoon.bsky.social about his research into refugees from around the Dutch republic who fled to Waterland during the "year of disaster" in 1672.

Cheers! We're working on new eps.
For some reason, previous post was removed.
New artwork! For the @historyofnl.bsky.social latest episode, showing the 1500 baptism of Prince Charles in #ghent — with the Belfry dragon really breathing fire during the ceremony. 🔥🐉
