Spotted in #Culross tonight
Evening strolls in this gorgeous little village never disappoint. These deep red #roses climbing up a blue trellis, set against stone walls and soft light from an old lantern — it’s like stepping into a storybook.

Undercover in the Apocalypse Covert dispatches from Sam J. Miller on craft, community, and surviving nightmare times.

OK let's do this.

I wanted to do a newsletter that felt fresh and fun to me, and "Undercover in the Apocalypse" is that creature - an epistolary science fiction story addressed to an army of shadow operatives.

I hope you'll join me on this covert mission.

Has "Cloud Atlas" Become a Genre? Thanks for reading my newsletter! If you wanna consume even more of my words, I have a novel coming out in August. It’s called Lessons in Magic and Disaster,...

Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell casts a huge shadow over the book world. I'm seeing a flood of books that borrow its genre-hopping, generation-spanning format.

So in my latest newsletter, I wonder: is Cloud Atlas becoming a bit of a genre on its own?

A photo of most of the children's books written by me that were published this year around the world, including both new titles and translations of older titles. There are books in Changana, Sena, Macua, Urdu, Bulgarian, Italian, Finnish, Turkish, Spanish, German, Portuguese, and English, among others.

A copy of apartamento magazine on the floor, showing the title "apartamento" in giant letters with small rows of contributors' names, followed by an open copy with the title in caps: "Hair washing in the Chinese boudoir." This is followed by a byline "by Yilin Wang" and the first two paragraphs of the essay.

HAIR WASHING IN THE CHINESE BOUDOIR

Clouds of hot steam drift through the bathhouse. A young Chinese woman, her eyes teasing with innocence and longing, wades through a pool of bath water. She swims up to another woman, grinning as she turns away shyly, pulling a carved jade hairpin from her long black hair, letting it cascade with a dramatic flourish. Tender hair washing ensues. The gentle splashing of water onto embroidered silk undergarments. The rubbing of shampoo until it bubbles, light and comforting. The two women wrap their arms around each other, bodies intertwined. They lean in close, but their lips do not meet.

I encountered this scene in a fleeting minute-long Chinese sapphic short
film while browsing the video-streaming site Bilibili. As a writer and
translator and genderqueer Chinese femme, I have spent years researching a long yet often forgotten lineage of queer Chinese myths and folktales, from the Rabbit God who blesses gay marriages to the genderfluid Guanyin to the gods of love He-He Er Xian. Yet it’s still exceedingly rare to see queer longing depicted in modern-day Chinese dramas and films—so rare that each such encounter, even in a short video clip online, brings flickers of surprise and delight, and a wish for more.

What do hair washing ads, Chinese sapphic films, the boudoir, and Qiu Jin have in common?

Read my newest short essay in Apartamento Magazine to find out! 💜 It is out on the shelves now as of today.

I nearly passed out from the pain when I got my first IUD placed. The (genuinely) very nice staff gave me a saltine and some water, as well as a 600mg advil. Then I drove to work. The fact that this has been allowed to continue for so long is actually evil.

“Is there internet on your iPhone?
It isn't connected, it's just a camera.
I'm envious of that.
I hate it. About 10 years ago, Katy Perry was talking to me about the internet armies of all the girl singers, and how cruel and rancid they were. I said, "Well, I wouldn't know because I'm not on the internet." She said,
"So, who are your rivals?" I just looked at her. It was my steely look. I said, "Katy, I don't have rivals. I have friends. All the other women singers that I know are friends. Nobody's competing. Get off the internet and you won't have rivals either."
